about

Since 2010, many netlabels and artists publish their new free music releases on the clongclongmoo website. Free means that you don't have to pay anything or register to download music. However, you can usually pay something to support the artists. Please note the licenses under which the music is published. This is important to know what you are allowed to do with the music. Please visit the labels' homepages to get the free music. Most files are published under a creative commons licence. At netlabellist you will find an extensive list of websites that also offer (or have offered) free music. If you run a netlabel yourself or offer your music for free and want to draw attention to it, you are welcome to use the submission form. And remember that clongclongmoo is not there to do business, because “Business Is Not My Music.”

Hello, I have made a few changes to the site. Unfortunately, I am not quite finished yet, but it should continue without interruption. I hope you find the changes useful. Stay tuned. Konrad

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. “Mahorka Remixes Vol.5”

Iliaque is a project of one of the co-founders of Ziklibrenbib (a French project to promote Creative Commons (CC) music in library) from Normandy (France). After having played in different noisy pop, industrial, electro and math rock groups, fascinated by netlabels and musicians working under CC, he decided to try his hand at an electronic music project based on CC material. The Iliaque project, that has matured for several years now, seeks to exploit the potentialities of CC music and explores this world through choice of sources and samples.

Iliaque’s debut on Mahorka brings back with a bang the “Mahorka Remixes” series, taking on tracks from the inspiring and wide catalog of the label in the six tracks of the release. It is as much a tribute to the creative commons netlabel as to the remixed artists.

Codes&Notes – Troubadour EP

Codes&Notes – Troubadour EP

Codes&Notes

“Troubadour EP”

It took a bit of time, but finally here’s the “Troubadour EP”: three original and fresh tracks for DJs and house music lovers!

As opposed to my previous EP “Together, Alone and Tired”, this one attempts to bring some light. It’s meant to be fun and carrying hope.

The first track, “Troubadour”, is a tech/progressive house tune with a break that switches on a 3/4 tempo and brings in… some medieval-sounding instruments. Hence the name, I guess! In case you are put off by that break, know that I’ve made a “straight edit” version of the tune. On the other hand, that would mean losing what makes this track so fun to listen ;-)

“Emergency Exit” goes into groovy/funky house territory with a seriously-funky bass line, while multiple catch lines are brought in. The objective of this tune is really to bring people on the dance floor. If you happen to play during a gig, feel free to let me know how the crowd reacted!
Again there’s a variation on this track included on the EP, which gets rid of the groovy-organ sections, just in case it’s not your thing.

Finally “Unreachable” raises the very important question of what would happen if a robot had to break up with it’s girlfriend, a… weather announcer. Because why not. The track tends towards the deeper end of house and uses a synthesized voice for the robot which is reminiscent of Radioheads’s “Fitter Happier”.
This final track brings a bit of melancholy to an otherwise uplifting EP.

All these tracks are licensed under CreativeCommons BY-SA 4.0, which is as permissive as it gets while respecting intellectual property. So share it, mix it, spread it as you wish. Just leave my name next to it ;-)

Jose Monsalve

“The Time”

Various Artists

“united:chernobyl.memories”

The failure at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is one of the most dramatic and tragic pages of the 20th century. This catastrophe is a symbol of the destructiveness of human delusions and the arrogant selfish worldview. Man allowed himself to think that he made nature work for himself, but nature has shown its true indomitable character. This incident also showed the depravity of the socialist authorities, which for a long time tried to hide the real scale of the disaster and the threat of radioactive contamination. This last drop became fatal for the majestic colossus on the clay feet called the USSR, which rapidly began to fall apart before everyone’s eyes. The whole world has learned a difficult lesson, which further led to a slowdown in the construction of new nuclear power plants and forced many developing countries to opt for environmental green technologies. From a social point of view, humanity has begun to rely more on international institutions that carefully monitor the situation around the world to try to avoid similar events. But as we know, this has already been repeated again… However, we should not despair, but it’s worth any experience, first of all negative, to adopt into service. This is the hard way on the stairs of progress.

“dystopia is fun 2.0”

Lavoura – Deep Safe / Aleyda

Lavoura – Deep Safe / Aleyda
[foot286]

Lavoura

“Deep Safe / Aleyda”

we received 2 tracks from Lavoura, and decided to release them as a “double-sided” EP.

Deep Safe

Deep Safe is the new Lavoura collective’s track, produced during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the first single to be released in a series that is being produced by its members remotely, each from their home studio. Based on influences of electronic music, Deep Safe dialogues with deep house – subgenre of house music – and with french touch. It brings a more dancing and hypnotic footprint, without losing the jazzy, psychedelic and futuristic essence. The production process was initiated by Fernando TRZ, on the pianos, who composed a backing track, following the recording of the overdubs, one by one, recording from their homes, first Marcelo Monteiro on saxophones, then Thiago Duar on guitars, Caleb Mascarenhas a.k.a. Zydron on synthesizers, Paulo Pires on drum machines and beats, and, finally, Junião on percussion and effects.

Aleyda

After Deep Safe, Aleyda is the new single from the collective Lavoura. The two tracks are marked by bringing together electronic music and jazz, a characteristic of the group. The sonority achieved is formed by multiple layers, at the same time that it is structured as a flow. Based on influences of spiritual jazz, electronic music, broken beat and downtempo, Aleyda is inspired by Wayne Shorter, Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Cinematique Orchestra, Jazzanova, 4Hero, Bugz in the Attic, Kaidi Tatham, IG Culture, Mark De Clive Lowe, Quantic. The production process was started by Thiago Duar, on bass and guitar, who composed a guide, in the preceding sequence the recording of the overdubs, one by one, recording from their homes, first Fernando TRZ, on the pianos; Marcelo Monteiro on saxophones and flute, after Caleb Mascarenhas also known as Zydron on synthesizers, Paulo Pires on electronic drums / beats, and, finally, Junião on percussion and effects. “Aleyda came from a root to contemplate time. The moments in the middle of the pandemic chaos, finding an inner peace was necessary. Aleyda was born from this inner search”, says Duar. As well as a river of multiple affluents, jazz, electronic music and Brazilian music are expressions of diversity and freedom. They are technological tools for solutions and struggle.

Luka Prinčič – ark/d, amorphic

Luka Prinčič

“ark/d, amorphic”

“an uninterrupted journey of purely computer music, which moves through diverse sonic fields and eavesdrops on the darker aspects of contemporary human condition”

The newest work by the Slovenian intermedia artist Luka Prinčič, the continued piece ark/d, amorphic is somewhat minimal, but a complex composition and an example of computer music in the new decade. With SuperCollider and computer programming Prinčič has managed to use various sound-generating algorithms to form a lengthy non-linear sound story. Searching for the amorphousness in the absence of form, he programmed the sound generators and transformations using the programming language like a loom, sewing the code into repetitive pulsations and ambiental scenery that eavesdrops on the darker aspects of contemporary human condition.

Deliberately in small initials, the title ark/d, amorphic alludes to a minority philosophy that seeks a world in the shadows of the spectacle and activates against the domination of the majority and the megalomania of post-objectification.

ESDLCP – Historial de Caidas Remastered

“Historial de Caidas Remastered”

A series of misapprehensions tie me up to this record. The first time I read about José Manuel Cerda, I thought that a homonymous colleague, expert in Middle Ages History, had decided to unveil an unknown musical side. After downloading Doble ola EP, I thought this was his first album, strongly recommended by Richi Tunacola (“one of my Desert Island Discs”). That was the work I wholeheartedly agreed to review (“I love it”, I doubtlessly replied) and that, when I started listening to it, I wasn’t able to recognize it at all. I headed towards my 30-year-old list of cassettes and compact discs to confirm this was the first time I listened to Historial de caídas, indeed.

I’m aware of this unforgivable confusion in an era we are able to check almost every data on the music we listen to, unlike the 80s, when most of the times we thought the name of a band to be the name of a solo artist or an album, or that Rick Astley’s voice belonged to an unmistakably African-American singer instead of a pale, red-headed fellow. But these interferences and entanglements may also belong to a time when, in a couple of minutes, we are able to download a catalog it would have taken years to complete otherwise, a time when we listen to such an amount of songs it is almost impossible for us to learn their lyrics by heart.

I’m starting to think it’s a mistake to mention all of this, for I suppose José Manuel Cerda is much younger than I am. Wrong again: we are the same age. Maybe this is not a mistake. Maybe the beauty of a collection called Historial de caídas (Tumbling Records) is, precisely, the vindication of error, diversion, and failure, trying to find a room and meaning for all of them. And this is the very gesture reinforced by this new release: at a time when the whole world around seems to collapse, not just our little lives, the traces of light these compositions offer resonate in a paradoxically hopeful manner.

This is also a self-reflective memory exercise of an album that turns out to be ten years old, but also the samples’ contained coming from long ago. I ask José Manuel, (although I’m not sure to call him by his real name, or El sueño de la casa propia, or Bruxista), about some of the audio references. He mentions Michael Jackson, The Flaming Lips, Nelly Furtado, David Bowie, Shellac, among other FLAC files inside a folder: “they were not just favorites, there were also rarities or mainstream pop records, raw material for extracting meaningful loops to construct a sonic building around, according to what they suggested”. These buildings, by the way, resemble Neto Iturrieta’s collage structure used as a cover for the first release, their elements flexibly and precariously combined, like an ephemeral piece of architecture.

If I’ve listened to Historial de caídas in 2010, I may have indulged in comparisons with other cratedigging/cut ‘n’ paste masters, such as The Books, but now I pay much more attention to some of the tracks tribal power, rhythms almost flirting with our very own cueca. I think the “latinamerican” label sounds kinda cliché, but it may properly apply here. I’m still listening to it on a cold, silent morning, through a spring afternoon, interrupted from time to time by a neighbor’s drill. Maybe that drill could be sampled. This makes me think about what would happen if we heard it coming through this record. And I listen to it once again, till becoming one of my Desert Island Discs.

about
Music which captures the underlying relation between human beings and natural forests: Lifecutter presents his vision in the soundtrack for the short film and research-art installation Sub Persona.

Managing forests is not a subject of everyday conversations, seldom even theoretical thinkings. But for the art tandem PLATEAURESIDUE these topics are the core of their artistic and also research work in which they connect landscape ecology and new media like film and photography and later exhibit them in various gallery spaces.

For the project Sub Persona they invited Domen Učakar to accompany their visual work with the audio setting. Domen Učakar has been performing and publishing music under the moniker Lifecutter for more than six years now and Sub Persona is his fourth album and a second one (after Safe Place – 2016 with Iztok Klančar) which has been made with a tight connection to a strong visual work.

The music captures the relation between humans and forests, which are the condition for life existence on Earth and at the same time an important economic resource. The ambient sonic structures may at first seem to communicate a feeling at peace with the current situation, but as the unnamed compositions progress they unveil the sheer brutality, the suspense of the dead silence and the… more

Codes&Notes – Aftermath

Codes&Notes – Aftermath

Codes&Notes

“Aftermath”

This track has a story.

Initially, it was about managing to make a decent track out of a melody that had been playing in my head for… about 10 years. The first attempts were put together years ago using LMMS. They were not good at all: LMMS is great for certain things, but not as great for others. Then this year, when I rebuilt a decent studio setup and went back to Reaper, I gave another go at it and… oh joy! It started to sound decent.

So far I had a house-ish track with a vibe similar to those romantic french movies from the 70s and 80s. Those who grew up watching “La Boum” and such will know what I mean.
But then I stumbled upon a movie on archive.org called “My Man Godfrey”, a delightful romantic comedy from 1936 starring Carole Lombart and William Powell. The movie being Public Domain I thought it would be okay to sample dialogs from it and rearrange them to tell a slightly different story. I added them to the track and… a miracle! It sounded fantastic! I was in heaven!

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), I decided to be 100% sure and checked whether it was actually legal to sample a movie in the Public Domain and… I got serious doubts. From what I understand, the movie could still be copyrighted in other countries, or its soundtrack (or its written dialogs) might still be protected. The joys of the current copyright mess… The only way to be sure would be to ask a lawyer to check whether the sampling is legit as far as his knowledge goes.
Right.
This is exactly why I believe copyright has it sooo wrong.

So I decided not to take the risk. I do find the whole thing ridiculous, but I don’t want to create any sort of trouble to the kind hosters of my tunes so I did a version without the dialogs. This is why this release has only one single track: a “romantic”, instrumental house tune. A bit of a shame if you ask me, but better than nothing!

The good news is: the track is under CreativeCommons BY-SA 4.0, which is as permissive as it gets while respecting intellectual property. So share it, mix it, spread it as you wish. Just leave my name next to it ;-)
