Spirit of Gravity – A poem in six parts

Spirit of Gravity

Spirit of Gravity

“A poem in six parts”

This is our brave attempt to epitomise our first 21 years as a Brighton-based platform for out-there music and sound. The album kicks off with Alien Alarms’ spasming sequencer grid trying to overcome the bird like nature of Ieva Dubova’s free and defiant piano, moving into the hypnotic cycles of Ensemble 1, with side one being rounded out by Spirit of Gravity host and overlord McCloud with his Banksy sampling, drone and Casio soup.

Side 2 moves from the introspective minimalism of Andrew Greaves, to Spirit of Gravity founders This Sound Bureaucracy reminiscing on the psychohistory of the ‘Gravity, and ending up with Gun Boiler’s maths-as-mayhem banger.

Representing the range of what we do at SoG, from lurching breakbeats to free noise and many points in between, this album is a slice of our musical life.

Jazzaria – Suspend Disbelief

Jazzaria – Suspend Disbelief

Jazzaria

“Suspend Disbelief”

Beliefs keep us grounded – contrariwise, they imply possession of the opposing disbelief. But there are times where we should suspend both extremes, and allow ourselves to float in between belief and disbelief. Like sand in a shaker, our temporary defiance of ideational gravity can enable us to express things beyond our conscious imaginings.

Featuring orchestral strings, choir, piano, shakers, synthesizers, brushed drums, flute, and bass.

“Coil Whine Memorial”

The Necrophile Hummingbird Netlabel & HAMFUGGI Records present Coil Whine Memorial by Yoshiwaku.

“Uncoil Music for Coil Lovers”

Years ago before The Immortal Coil tribute, in 2005, after the disparition of Jhonn Balance, I had contributed under the moniker of CorteX with IDX1274 to Full Cold Moon a tribute by netlabel Darkwinter.
Coil wasn’t really music but more a kind of ritualist performance, the shapes were secondary face to the essence. And this tribute was a kind of panorama, around the world at that time, of some of the experimenters with this spirit.
Few months before the death of Peter Sleazy Christopherson I wrote to him and he was interested to contribute to the next Necktar. Perhaps Necktar 2017 and next Pikadon and The World is Over! were quite close
to be the creations of another kind of TOPY Network. Anyway these words are here to try to show how I feel related to Coil and why so many years later today I need to pay my tribute to Coil.
What is really alive need to die to let live the next one. Life is this cycle.

Last but not least A Symbiotic Experience is a huge inspiration for this album…

Lyrics on Psychic Transmission taken from Coil documents collected by Brainwashed website.

This album is dedicated to every mutant who removed their skin each time needed to birth again.

RAJA KIRIK – Phantasmagoria of Jathilan

RAJA KIRIK – Phantasmagoria of Jathilan
[YESNO 106]

RAJA KIRIK

“Phantasmagoria of Jathilan”

“The Phantasmagoria of Jahtilan” is a music performance by Raja Kirik in collaboration with singer Silir Wangi and performer Ari Dwianto. This project investigate the Jathilan horse dance, a folk trance dance popular in Java, Indonesia, as a way of regaining strength despite defeat. Jathilan is an acronym of “Jarane jan tjil-thilan”, which translates to a horse that dances irregularly. The current form of Jathilan developed after the Java War (fought between Javanese rebels and the colonial Dutch empire from 1825 to1830) as a folk practise to grapple with the defeat by the Dutch Empire and the devastation caused by the civil war between the Javanese population and the Javanese aristocracy who supported the Dutch. In Jathilan people use stick horses made of bamboo as a form of appreciation as well as an expression of support for rebel leader Prince Diponegoro’s horsemens who fought bravely against the Dutch colonial forces. Despite the actual defeat of the rebels, Jathilan itself always depicts an imaginary victory of the local rebel cavalry against demons, monsters, or the colonisers. This heroic performance therefore has multiple purposes: to entertain, to encourage, to heal, and to unite people against oppression.

Raja Kirik’s “The Phantasmagoria of Jathilan” is an artistic exploration of the Jathilan tradition, re-interpreting its musical, vocal, and dance forms. Syncopated electronic rhythms combine with the metallic percussion of homemade instruments that is as trance-inducing as it is bellicose. Beautifully monotonous singing in a captivating repetitive melismatic style weaves through lilting melodies that gust out of makeshift wind instruments. With frantic, seemingly endless forward propulsion, the music of Raja Kirik inhabits a wide emotional breadth, cycling from disappointment to anger to loneliness.

During the piece, the dancer embodies various heroic characters, such as Bujang Ganong, Menak Jinggo, Hanuman, or the non-fictional hero prince Diponegoro. At times the dancer also becomes a dance instructor and MC, who interacts with the audience.

Karlheinz Essl – No-Input Mixer Studies

Karlheinz Essl – No-Input Mixer Studies

Karlheinz Essl

“No-Input Mixer Studies”

Karlheinz Essl, born in Vienna in 1960, is a pioneering avant-garde composer known for his groundbreaking work in instrumental and electronic music. Embracing technology from the early 1980s, Essl delved into the realm of computers, where he developed innovative software for algorithmic composition and real-time performance. One of his most influential creations, the RTC-lib (Real Time Composition Library for Max), originated at IRCAM in Paris in 1991 and remains widely used in the computer music community.

In 2022, Essl embarked on a daring exploration of new avenues in electronic music, shifting away from computers and digital tools to embrace the captivating world of analog modular synthesizers. This artistic journey birthed two captivating works: “Coastlines,” a work-in-progress performed on a MakeNoise O-COAST modular synth, and the suite “Throbbing Crystals,” a four-movement masterpiece played on a Doepfer DARK ENERGY synth. In these compositions, Essl discarded conventional keyboards and sequencers, opting instead for non-linear feedback systems that offered chaotic and enthralling sonic landscapes. He likened performing live on this “wild instrument” to riding a spirited horse across Lake Constance, where constant control and adjustment of countless knobs forged an unforgettable sonic trail.

In 2023, Essl ventured further into the uncharted territory of sound by exploring a broken analog mixer he stumbled upon in his studio. Remaining faithful to the concept of non-linear feedback systems, he experimented with different modes of interaction, generating sounds solely by feeding the output back into the input. This unique approach was orchestrated through instrumental control, utilizing faders and knobs to manipulate the sound, with even the slightest finger movement causing dramatic shifts in the sonic output.

In a whirlwind of creativity spanning just three days, from July 3 to 5, 2023, Essl recorded the seven tracks that comprise his magnum opus “Studies for No-Input Mixer.” Each track employed a distinct number of “voices” arranged in counterpoint, paying homage to Conlon Nancarrow’s legendary “Studies for Player Piano,” which served as an inspirational and motivational source, pushing Essl to brave the unexplored territories of sound.

*****

Beyond his remarkable accomplishments as a composer and performer, Essl’s journey in music has been enriched by diverse roles as an improviser, media artist, and software developer. He studied composition under Friedrich Cerha in Vienna and furthered his passion for musicology, completing his studies with a dissertation on Anton Webern. His tenure as composer-in-residence at the Darmstadt Summer School (1990-94) and IRCAM in Paris (1991-93) further fueled his artistic growth.

With a profound affinity for the poetics of serial music, Essl’s pioneering work with computers and algorithmic composition significantly influenced his approach to composition. During the 1990s, he explored innovative projects for the Internet while increasingly immersing himself in the world of improvisation. His prominence as a composer led to his feature at the prestigious Salzburg Festival in 1997.

In addition to his work in instrumental music, Karlheinz Essl is a trailblazer in electronic music, interactive real-time compositions, and sound installations. He crafts software environments to facilitate algorithmic composition and live electronics, allowing him to play his unique computer-based composition setups, as well as an array of instruments ranging from toy piano and electric guitar to analog synthesizers.

Karlheinz Essl’s musical odyssey is one of constant exploration and innovation, pushing the boundaries of modern music aesthetics and leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of contemporary electronic and experimental music.
