about

Since 2010, many netlabels and artists publish their new free music releases on the clongclongmoo website. Free means that you don't have to pay anything or register to download music. However, you can usually pay something to support the artists. Please note the licenses under which the music is published. This is important to know what you are allowed to do with the music. Please visit the labels' homepages to get the free music. Most files are published under a creative commons licence. At netlabellist you will find an extensive list of websites that also offer (or have offered) free music. If you run a netlabel yourself or offer your music for free and want to draw attention to it, you are welcome to use the submission form. And remember that clongclongmoo is not there to do business, because “Business Is Not My Music.”

“Gloom”

The Hathaway Family Plot – The Next Room

The Hathaway Family Plot – The Next Room

The Hathaway Family Plot

“The Next Room”

In the fall of 2020 my regular gig playing piano for ballet classes was forced by COVID to go virtual. I still commuted to campus and broadcast my playing from an empty studio. The building was being renovated, so a small group of construction workers walked the student-less hallways. Between classes, I began to experiment with recording my playing from a small portable recorder placed in the hallway outside the studio–partly to capture the strange whistle that one particular corridor often produces. The result is a hiss-heavy album wherein construction workers are heard walking by, an instructor’s voice is faintly heard far away, and the piano also sounds like a distant thing.*

The resulting recordings resonated with me emotionally in a way that felt appropriate for the year. It’s been hard to see and recognize beauty. Truth is relentlessly attacked, obfuscated, and denied. It feels like we’re stuck in a room outside the room where something beautiful may be happening. We know or believe that it exists, but we can’t see it or touch it. We’re being kept out of that space.

Headphones are recommended.

*(There is also one song recorded at home from the hallway outside my office–the recorder set next to a dog who is resting in his bed, nervously smacking his lips. Is it a strange kind of ASMR? Is this whole album? It may be to me.)

entropija – genealogija B: 2016-2018
[EEM060]

entropija

“genealogija B: 2016-2018”

Continuing on from “genealogija A”, this is the second instalment of a retrospective collection. Including sounds from even before the start of entropija project, the album timeline spans almost 2 years, between August 2016 and June 2018. In contrast to previous album‘s colorful dynamics, this is a document of a more abstract side of entropija‘s performative spectrum. Clusters and bits of sound engage in complex interactions, trying to morph into a cohesive body, but the form seems to escape each time just before solidifying. Hints of order or harmony are quickly overwhelmed, and by the end, completely buried under layers of intersecting accidents. If there was a genre label suitable for this record, “liquid noise” would probably be it.

I’m worried for the fall
And the coming crash
It took us ten years to dig out from the last collapse
And now we’re sliding back

I’m worried for the fall
And the Second Wave
When I drive through town I see it coming
Or maybe it’s here
And no one seems to care.

I’m worried for the fall
And schools and of losing our house
and the last faith that I had in common good
and empathy
This year will hang over the rest of our lives.

Luca Formentini – Art Spaces

Luca Formentini – Art Spaces
[Lav86]

Luca Formentini

“Art Spaces”

An investigation – abstract

I’ve always been fascinated by watching and listening to the way we as human beings react to finding ourselves placed into different environments.

Specifically, I am intrigued by the way we manage the challenge of being in a space which is not created to be the stage where we can perform our personality and actively interact with the objects and the people who surround us, as a museum is.

Being in a museum limits our personality exposure, at the same time it engages our senses and sensitivity.
Is such context creating a push towards the outside in a context which makes such expression difficult to be exposed?

A modern art museum visit is able to stress such experience way further, visitors can sometimes be pushed to face languages and contents which run on the very border of comprehension and social acceptability.
As human beings we interact with habitats through different ways of using our physicality; I think that more or less consciously and intentionally our presence affirms itself through the sounds we make.

My first audio recording of my visit through a modern art exposition happened when visiting the Serpentine Galleries in London, a funny feeling of displacement imbued me because of sounds coming from both sides of the exposition internal entrance.
After visiting the Serpentine Galleries I visited the Tate Modern.

I recorded my walk through the different rooms, trying to notice the relation between the space, the exhibited works of art and the way people were managing their presence: imposing it or trying to be as transparent as possible.
While walking through the expositions’ rooms I was caught by another delicate emotional resonance.
A new element was coming into play, directly connected to a more emotional layer.
Temporal suspension and physical floating were somehow represented by the experience of walking through the artworks.
The peak was reached when I entered the room where the video work by Gülsün Karamustafa “Memory of a Square” was playing.
Something had happened.
By entering that room I understood what I would have done with the recordings I was collecting.
Back to my studio I recorded a musical dialogue over the environmental noise of walking through art spaces, art places.
A sort of counterpoint in play between my physicality and the sonic trace of the space.

I’ve been visiting and recording the space of modern art museums and expositions, such as: Guggenheim and MoMA NYC, MoMA SF, MOCA LA, MCA in Chicago, Modern art museum in Philadelphia, Mudam in Luxembourg, Stedelijk in Amdsterdam, Lenbachhaus in Munich, Serpentine and Tate Modern in London and Hangar Bicocca in Milan.

morgen wurde und tis – zeitigt

morgen wurde und tis – zeitigt
[134]

morgen wurde und tis

“zeitigt”

“Litanies”

Glitch, digital accidents or acoustic samples, the musical atmospheres that Solal creates with Joseph underline by their theatricality the dark and inexorable destiny of the heroes. Adolescent incantations, ecological stories, the interpretations of the young artist pay homage to the great epics of literature such as Dune, the ancient tragedies, or to the tradition of oral tales.

Konejo – Snapping Back In

Konejo – Snapping Back In
[LCNLP115]

Konejo

“Snapping Back In”

The Necrophile Hummingbird presents : a dream.
This album is such a joy because there has been no sampling album release on the netlabel since Size to Seizure 3 years ago. Mostly because the analogic side is growing out of control… and perhaps because turntablism is more fitting to that. Beyond the necessary struggle to an equal access to sample for everyone doing free music releases and not only the artists signed with major record companies, coming first is the right to use anything released in the public sphere as a right to answer with plunderphonics. The sampling art is more related to cut-up techniques and philosophy. It’s a way to re-interprete one’s reality. The same way that dreams are remixes of our waking lives. Perhaps this Snapping Back In is more a kind of art therapy to exorcise a nightmare. Whatever…

Here is Konejo presentation :

Recorded at home between June 11th and August 17th, 2020. About 150 sample sources were used in the making on this album (most of them from beloved movies from the 60s/70s), plus some cheap online apps and a Maschine MK2 for live beats and basslines. I hope you’ll find your own meaning in this deeply personal and haunted copied/pasted storytelling so it’ll have been worth the stealing.

Same as every previous release, this was already kind of a tribute to Ennio Morricone before the Maestro passed away. “Snapping Back In” is dedicated to him, like most music from the 21th century should be. RIP.

Artwork by B-Maltais & Konejo (first EP together coming soon).

Kindly and brilliantly mastered by Anatoly ‘Tokee’ Grinberg

Thanks to La Loupe Satanique for unknowingly helping me get my hand on most of the sampled sources.

Castro & Margherit – Efimero Perpetuo

Castro & Margherit – Efimero Perpetuo

Castro & Margherit

“Efimero Perpetuo”

When preparing a record, collaboration often presents unexpected signals for people who decide to do something together. These can be extremely varied signals, ranging from a sign of our society’s predominantly authoritarian leaning, to the expression of alternative ways for meeting and getting in touch reassured by practice.

This album by Jorge Castro and Nico Margherit discovers two people coming together because of their friendship – a personal, affective bond, which mutates throughout this work, realizing their mutual admiration in the process.

Intuition prevails in this album soundwork, following affinity and taste, but far from a free improv album. While this is present at the beginning – and the material they recorded is huge, enough for a ten-record-box set – the result is not a faithful delivery of it, but the starting point for a true immersion on it, generating new recordings to rescue some ideas that gradually appear as islands in this sea of early intuition.

What are those islands made of? Jorge Castro’s subtle rhythm work on the elements arising from Nico Margherit’s tonal and compositional ideas. Between tracks, like under the islands, there is still drifting, because there is time, listening and sensitive experiences about the world it embraces.

The album was recorded before the pandemic, during successive meetings at La Cúpula studio, in the heart of Mercado Norte in Córdoba, Argentina. But editing and mixing were carried out during months of strictest quarantine that area went through. That may be the reason why Track No. 6, the one closing the album, is the most noisy of all, remarkably evoking the mind-blowing silence experienced then, now stepping aside and welcoming the rumor and buzz those who’ve been through a lot of silence long for.
