“Highway 90 – From The Dead Sea of Galilee To Beit She’an”
For every person that has known the burden of nostalgia, the heavyweight of decaying memories, and a sense of quasi-eternal longing which goes far beyond words, as beautiful as they sometimes may sound.
Well, Kai Engel didn’t just sit around doing nothing at all. That kind of person can’t afford to. So, what is his brand new album like? It’s pretty much a soundtrack to a movie that never was and never will be. Yet we can get a glimpse of it by exploring the palette of sounds and listening to every note closely – there are landscapes and images, characters and stories, scenes and moods. There are calls and echoes. So, after all that film probably does exist.
“Wind Of Change” is the 4th release from the Russian beatmaker/producer Bruks with Dusted Wax Kingdom. Dreamy hip-hop instrumentals, cooked with dusty jazzy samples, deep atmospheric synths and lush drum breaks.
Trance-inducing and as thick as sludge, Vegas Diamond’s sophomore is a concise record of his great talent. These four tracks meld together aggressive groove with hypnotic melodies, tessellating around a defiant rhythm and pulsating with confident and a unique voice. From the emotive opener ‘Ion’, to the off-kilter and crunchy churn of ‘Visor’, to the vicious beats of ‘Real’ and the final, melancholic laments of ‘Cube’, every inch of ‘Hyper’ feels, simultaneously, eclectically self-contained and continuously conceptual; a constantly evolving stream of ideas.
Stylistically, ‘Hyper’ sees Vegas Diamond traversing the musical ideas of Monodeer and Nullsleep, and setting up shop somewhere in the middle. The melodies are genuinely otherworldly; atmospheric and seeping emotion, cascading over the dense textures that make the release sound so huge, and the beats hit like sledgehammers on concrete, loose but still incredibly strong.
“The City Without Sun” is a concept album of instrumental electronic music. An ideal soundtrack for the kid’s novel by Michel Grimaud ‘La ville sans soleil’. A French novel of the 70s, which in the post ’68 era, tell us about of a group of teenager activists against the pollution of their ‘city without sun’ by an unscrupulous local squire.A book that still has not lost his, though simplistic, message of rebellion and hope. A book to be known, to be implemented, to not forget.
“There is a light that shines beyond all things on earth, beyond the highest, the very highest heavens. This is the light that shines in your heart” (Chandogya Upanishad)
“Remember the clear light, the pure clear white light from which everything in the universe comes, to which everything in the universe returns; the original nature of your own mind. The natural state of the universe unmanifest. Let go into the clear light, trust it, merge with it. It is your own true nature, it is home”.
(Tibetan Book of the Dead)
“If you light a lamp for someone else,
it will also brighten your path”.
“Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light.”
Musicians from Izhevsk are back with fresh material. Insanity13 once again brings you vivid mix of stylish grooves and dark psychedelic tones. Highly detailed instrumentals are backed up by Oxy’s (Intoxicated Piano) sensual voice. Between distorted bass drums and long gloomy dronings of deep electronic chords, beautifully layered vocals will steal you from your room and set you adrift in this sticky sea of melted sound. Give your ears a nice treat of saturated synthetic dreaminess and be sure to share it with your friends.
poj.wlkp, one of 9 musical projects of polish amateur musician Jan Strach, has always been his outlet for the most depressing, intimate feelings and it is not different this time. Sadness prevails in the lyrics and the melodies alike, which as always follow the diy ethics stated in poj.wlkp’s “hortifolk” manifesto, but here the instrumental tracks are much more polished and include synths, keyboards and effects, no longer leaving the acoustic guitar as the main instrument.
The melodies have been created as combination of fits of inspiration, structured improvisation and laborous calculation in order to achieve something original yet not overbearing or pretentious. Somewhere between sadcore, gothic, folk and rock, the songs penetrate an area of eternal melancholy, while taking interesting turns in chord choices, rhythm and structure.
The album took 3 years of creation in a process equally excruciating, purifying and satisfying. This is the end result, a labour of love of one person, perhaps lacking in professionalism, but never in genuine passion and spirit. Dark, sad and avoiding obvious solutions, and thus adhering the philosophy of every poj.wlkp album so far.
Former Descent is the new Electronica project of Bas Welling, best known for previous works under the names Neurobit, R10T33R and Rioteer. Bas Welling created loads of chaos the past few years with his label Crackbeats wich has a focus on the extreme side of Breakcore, Noise and Digital hardcore. Some might know him as Neurobit who released quit some 8 bit mayhem on labels like Enfant Terrible and Retinascan. But he is also known as a producer and remixer for artists like Ra-X, The C64 Orchestra, Deathmaker, Meldy Peaches and Maurizio Bianchi. With Former Descent his music goes in a new direction, with strong influences by his aliases.
After releasing the debut 12inch “My life in the box of ghosts” on Shipwrec Records and recording a track for the soundtrack of the movie “Exploitation” by director Edwin Brienen, Former Descent is back with his first digital EP. “The State Of In-Between” contains 5 personal ambient tracks all recorded with a Yamaha Tenori-On between the 24th and the 28th of January 2013.
these are the darker sides of justin james a.k.a. drmlgcc: atmospheric and dense, yet spacious at the same time. three tracks, located somewhere between musical architecture and spontaneity, are the building blocks of “treading”. justin guides us through sounds as diverse as can be. they are at times repetitive and minimal, ambient and floating, experimental and playful. they are organic and synthetic, wild and fragile, and occasionally steeped in krautrock improvisation.
all of this forms the basis for drmlgcc’s sound stories – his slowly evolving, acoustic tales.
it took him quite some time to complete this release, let us spend all the time necessary to be taken away, to experience the three tracks thoroughly.
