about

Since 2010, many netlabels and artists publish their new free music releases on the clongclongmoo website. Free means that you don't have to pay anything or register to download music. However, you can usually pay something to support the artists. Please note the licenses under which the music is published. This is important to know what you are allowed to do with the music. Please visit the labels' homepages to get the free music. Most files are published under a creative commons licence. At netlabellist you will find an extensive list of websites that also offer (or have offered) free music. If you run a netlabel yourself or offer your music for free and want to draw attention to it, you are welcome to use the submission form. And remember that clongclongmoo is not there to do business, because “Business Is Not My Music.”

update, February 1st, 2026

Dear friends and followers of clongclongmoo. It's great to have you here. As you may have noticed, the site has changed a bit. Some people wanted to be able to access the music with fewer clicks. That should work again now. Here's a quick note to everyone who uses relatively new platforms such as Mirlo, Faircamp, or Coop: feel free to use the submit form to draw attention to your new music. I'd especially appreciate hearing from anyone who runs a netlabel with free Creative Commons music. Thank you! Konrad from clongclongmoo

Big Blood – First Aid Kit

Big Blood – First Aid Kit

Big Blood

“First Aid Kit”

Written and recorded at home by Big Blood. All songs by Big Blood except “Ring Telephone Ring” by Barbara Lynn.“She can be a real pain in the ass,” is how Big Blood’s Caleb Mulkerin and Colleen Kinsella describe having their daughter as a member of the band they formed in the wake of Cerberus Shoal’s dissolution. A band made up of family seems like an ideal situation. You get to play with those you love, and practicing/recording is always just a matter of going into the next room. “If you don’t have kids, I can imagine that is an obvious assumption,” Caleb says. “However, if you do have children, I don’t need to explain how much of an emotional mess this can be.” Parents don’t stop being parents, nor do kids stop being kids for band practice. “There are endless amounts of broader ‘life’ examples brought up at any given time while playing with Quinnisa, and I can’t help stopping to discuss them as they come up,” he says. He understands Quinnisa’s position. “She’s rightly annoyed at being parented in a ‘judgment free’ zone. Lots of practices end with her being tossed from the band.”

His issues are nothing, however, to what she brings to the band. Quinnissa, who was 13 when First Aid Kit was recorded has skills. “She’s a total ringer and a complete pro in a live setting,” Mulkerin acknowldges. “She’s a lot more reliable than her grumpy parents.” Indeed, Quinnisa’s voice has developed into an astonishing powerhouse of force. While she has been contributing to Big Blood records almost since birth, First Aid Kit solidifies her clear talent. All her lyrics are improvised in the moment while recording, a real shock to realize considering how insightful and perfectly suited to the song they are. “Never Ending Nightmare” candidly and perfectly describes the anxieties of being a teenager today: “The quiet growing inside me is louder/I should have known not to trust another stranger.” Or the heartache of “1000 Times”: “I think about you at least 1000 times a day/I can’t even say hi/What’s wrong, what’s wrong, what’s wrong with me?” What more, her natural ability to perform amazes her parents. “She’ll be slopping around all practice, and you are convinced she doesn’t have it,” Kinsella says. “Then we record and she nails the guitar and vocals, even does something better. She’s in control.”

Teenage impulses fit right in with the band’s intent, which is making music that’s honest, inclusive and flawed. Inventiveness in the moment wins out over belabored, repeated takes, as the group is in a constant state of creation. Songs sound fully built and realized, but they actually rise out of improvisation. Big Blood channel the moment and let go once they finish. “I think about Ursula Le Guinn and how she talks about everything she takes in becoming compost,” Kinsella says. “It mixes together, and when it comes out there’s all that stuff in it, sometimes it’s direct and sometimes not.” Mulkerin’s descriptions of different songs on the record run like faint recalled dreams. “I don’t remember much other than it flowed from the three of us absurdly quick,” he says of opener “In My Head”. “Haunted” has intriguing lyrics like “I’m haunted by your pictures/That faded like a memory” but, as Mulkerin says, “Colleen is not one to try for things in any sort of premeditated way, it just flows and evolves.” Many songs touch on the fear and horrors outside a safe home space, fitting for a record made during COVID. They sing about their feelings in the moment, so lyrics are often topical. “Makes Me Wonder” is about Ma’kihia Bryant, a 16 year-old black girl shot by police (“Be still the mess you make/The life you squeeze, you take,” and later in the song…”She should be alive today.”)

While any fan of the band will tell you that no two albums sound very much alike, First Aid Kit displaying for the first time their affinity for the emotional effects of bands like The Cure, Bauhaus and The Clean, there’s a clear thread throughout all their records. First, there’s Kinsella’s voice, which pivots from upbeat fun to pure dread, presumably based on how she was feeling that day she recorded. Secondly, Mulkerin’s production preserves layers of could-have-beens by keeping the ghostly presence of past takes alive in the background of tracks like subliminal thoughts. Their songs achieve the double satisfaction of being immediate, catchy and memorable, while also revealing inner depths at repeated listens. Some of the best experimental music is cloaked as mundane.

First Aid Kit was recorded entirely at the family’s home onto 1” eight-track tape. It achieves the magic of capturing a moment and making a lasting impression. There aren’t many family bands, and there’s definitely no other band like this.

Prima Limón – Arena

Prima Limón – Arena

Prima Limón

“Arena”

Geist

Hurricane Gold

Hurricane Gold is a concept album that utilizes orchestra, slide guitar, and crooning vocal harmonies to weave the listener into a number of characters and roles. The lyrics were written from multiple perspectives, with the main narrative being the expectations and pressures of parenthood. It was written for my grandma, a high school teacher who raised four kids on her own in the seventies.

Dominik Vogel – A Strange Loop around the Planet

Dominik Vogel – A Strange Loop around the Planet
[Wuerfel 38]

Dominik Vogel

“A Strange Loop around the Planet”

The title of the album and the titles of the individual tracks already suggest it: It’s about futuristic soundscapes, strange seeming sounds, but also loops and here and there beats. Dominik Vogel operates with his modular system once again at the intersection of techno, IDM, ambient and sound art. All of this, as it were, at the open heart, because everything is as always recorded live in one pass and only minimally post-processed.

If you’ve ever had the thought that Dominik Vogel looks like the commander of a spaceship on his equipment, you’re welcome to fully embrace that notion here. Two young test listeners commented on the album independently of each other with the words: “Sounds like being in a spaceship” and “Sounds like being in a science fiction movie”. Asked about this, Dominik responds with: “You could say the album is the soundtrack to a movie which is shot from a spaceship :)”.

So if you like, you can rhyme together your own sci-fi story in the combination of the talking titles and the music. Of course, the inclined listeners can also just dive into these sound worlds, let themselves be carried away and feel inside, what associations the heard arouses in you. There is a lot to discover here and it is worthwhile to let the album work on you in a moment of rest.

Wanda & Nova deViator – ARP 339

Wanda & Nova deViator – ARP 339

Wanda & Nova deViator

ARP 339

With Escherian devotion to infinity, the electro-punk music charge of Wanda and Nova deViator subtly flows from cool cosmic cyberfuturism to heated dance-floor fever. Drawing on a variety of genre offshoots, Maja Delak and Luka Prinčič use repetition to seamlessly develop the heritage of polyrhythm and deep bass tremors from domestic intimacy into an all-encompassing atmosphere. Their sonic habitat reflects existing social structures with technological precision, throwing a harsh light on flaws without fetishizing criticism. The world they weave from fragments of universality via sizzling electronic impulses and hypnotic vocal expression would likely be described as science fiction three decades ago – but today it is uncomfortable to think how accurately it reflects our own reality.

Building on the foundation established by their praised debut Pacification (Kamizdat, 2013), the diverse artists complement and upgrade the sounds of their upcoming new record with a live performance that reconceptualises their musical hybrid within the framework of intermedia and dance arts. Sensuality meets anger, passion cavorts intellectually with rebellion, yet at the same time, without endangering their own principles, the duo successfully follows the unwritten rule – this kind of music simply has to catch one’s ear willingly, sink in and touch the listener.

überwiegend im First-Take aufzunehmen.

Fear Administration

“Auf den Punkt”

From an idea to make strictly monotonous, electronic music with straight bass lines, which is ‘to the point’ / ‘auf den Punkt’, became this EP, which contains according to my head but more chaos than originally planned. But what are plans for, if you can’t throw them out of order?
So I simulate here analog synthetics, ElectronicBodyMusic, scraps of thoughts, anger, helplessness with beats, bass and atmospheric surfaces to the virtual point.
May each person find this point for himself.

“The Dub Theory “Chapter Eight””

Markus Masuhr – The Dub Theory „Chapter Eight“ (Insectorama156)

It’s time for the next part of my Dub Theory Series. The Dub Theory Chapter Eight brings 8 new purely functional loop-based dubtechno tracks designed to take you on a journey through forests and mountains to the sea. Slow down your life and go in search of rest and relaxation into the depths of echoes and chords, surrounded by wobbling basses and constructs of danceability.

Echoes of a distant past,
Delays that seem to forever last,
Reverb through the valleys wide,
Textures of the earth collide.

Landscapes painted with such care,
A symphony for all to share,
The crunch of leaves, the rustle of trees,
Textures that are sure to please.

Echoes of a world that’s old,
Delays that tell of stories told,
Reverb that resounds with might,
Textures that bring pure delight.

So let us listen to the echoes of time,
And let the delays create a rhyme,
Let the reverb fill our hearts with grace,
And textures of the land take their place.

Tracklist:
1.Echoes in the Mind
2.Waves of Tranquillity
3.Recognized Illusions
4.Deep Valley Blues
5.Contemplative Journey
6.Contemplating the Unknown
7.Delving into the Abyss
8.Lake of Serenity

Depression Embrace – Вилино коло – Vilje Kolo – Fairy Ring

Depression Embrace – Вилино коло – Vilje Kolo – Fairy Ring
[zen270]

Depression Embrace

Vilje Kolo – Fairy Ring”

Вилино коло – Vilje Kolo, or “Fairy Ring” – is a common toponym. Places with this name were associated with legends that said that fairies used to play there. A fairy ring is a circle or semicircle of grass that differs from the surrounding grass (it is more lush or stunted, a different color). It is often found in a clearing, on top of a hill, or near a spring. It could be marked by a circle of mushrooms in a meadow (a fairy tale). If there was an elevation within this circle, it was said that a bagpiper or some other player was standing on it, while the fairies danced around it. Other similar toponyms indicate the same belief (Vilina Voda, Vilina izvor).

There was a fear of illness and death among the people who would step on the fairy ring. A man who stumbled upon a fairy’s playground (or dinner, found a fairy bathing or enjoying some other kind of pleasure) would be severely punished. The severity of this offense is so serious because fairy rites are mysterious, prohibit the presence of the uninitiated and take place in taboo places. In the legend about the fairy ring, the practice of initiation rites is reflected. A girl is considered a girl from the day she first enters the circle and goes through this important rite of passage. The offender was punished by deprivation of sight or hearing, paralysis, or death.

Forgiveness of sins and healing could only be given to him by the fairy. The trampling of the fairy’s playground and the outcome of this transgression are sung by the Sibinian folk song Janko s vila. For fairies and other demons, the game has a very reasonable strength. Fairies get angry if someone interrupts them in a game uninvited, while, on the other hand, their favorite pastime is to bring someone into the circle and “outplay” them. They would transfer part of their supernatural power to the grass they were playing on, so it became “dangerous” or “miraculous”.

Various Artists – Sampler 93 – n.UR-Kult 010 – der Gelbe, das Tape
[n.UR-Kult 010]

Various Artists

“Sampler 93 – n.UR-Kult 010 – der Gelbe, das Tape”

Guten Tag! Weiße Handschuhe bitte an Sonic Bum. Wer weiß schon, was in diesem Kopf vorgeht?

released November 27, 1993

Gemastert am 24.11.93 von DIGITAL DROPOUTS GmH Langenhagen. Assistiert haben Willi D. und René Bleep Sonic bum.

“Explain to me your meme”

It had been a while since Superfreak had started pretending to understand what everyone was talking about. He looked at the memes and smiled just for fear of being left out. At that point he decided to update himself by opening the semiotics manuals.
This album is on his journey between the generation of meaning and the memetic irony. A failed journey translated in music in a cheerful but melancholic Casio tone-saxophone-drums weird pop.

Superfreak quote: “Special Thanks to Lexia. Rivista di Semiotica Viralità. A book that turned me on Memes, semiotics and all that boring stuff that I put in the lyrics. Music, English, Theories in this album are wrong or imperfect, as imperfect is my life”.
