about

Since 2010, many netlabels and artists publish their new free music releases on the clongclongmoo website. Free means that you don't have to pay anything or register to download music. However, you can usually pay something to support the artists. Please note the licenses under which the music is published. This is important to know what you are allowed to do with the music. Please visit the labels' homepages to get the free music. Most files are published under a creative commons licence. At netlabellist you will find an extensive list of websites that also offer (or have offered) free music. If you run a netlabel yourself or offer your music for free and want to draw attention to it, you are welcome to use the submission form. And remember that clongclongmoo is not there to do business, because “Business Is Not My Music.”

Palancar – Desert Power

Palancar – Desert Power

Palancar

“Desert Power”

My latest release is a collection of rhythmic ambient pieces called “Desert Power”, directly inspired by Frank Herbert’s “Dune”.

I have lost track of how many times I have read the “Dune” series of novels over the many decades I’ve been reading science fiction. Most recently, I had gone many years without cracking one of them open, but my interest was rekindled by the release of the movie “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve. While I can see how the uninitiated might find the movie impenetrable or confusing, for those of us who have read the series many times, it was a revelatory experience, especially for many of us who had difficulty imagining how the Dune universe would look and feel.

Where the Lynch movie took the book in a distinct stylistic direction, the Villeneuve film feels to me more like a direct reflection of the book. Unfortunately, even the Villeneuve version does not touch on some of the key controversial themes in the book, particularly the objectivist and misogynist undercurrents. Probably too much to expect from a Hollywood movie, but I look forward someday to a deeper and more agnostic exploration of the story, something that explains how a feudal paternalistic society that treats women as property could possibly morph into one where women literally rule the universe. Perhaps the second movie will explore some of these issues.

In any event, after I had watched the film five times in a row, over and over again, I found Villeneuve’s distinct vision of the Dune universe to be driving my sudden renewed fascination with the novels. Finally I could imagine how the Dune empire would truly look and feel to those embedded within it. And I found myself suddenly inspired to fit music to these profound questions that Denis Villeneuve and Frank Herbert created in my mind.

This album, which practically wrote itself, was the result. I started on the first bits of it in the days immediately following the movie’s late October release and completed the album less than four months later. For me this is an unbelievably quick turnaround for a full length work. In software engineering, I have found there is a phenomenon where I can become so immersed in the work that I lose all track of time and begin thinking in the language of the computer itself. Hours pass in an eyeblink, and I have many times looked up to see a full work day had passed in a span that felt like mere minutes. I call this “the zone”, which is one of the most exhausting-but-thrilling pure productivity states I’ve ever experienced.

This album is the first time I believe I’ve ever encountered the zone in the realm of creating music. Of course, whether or not the resulting work is better music or not remains to be determined, but the process itself was so personally restorative and renewing that it is hard for me not to look at it as a gift from some abstract higher power. I hope that you enjoy the resulting album as much as the album has helped me personally.

Chebeen Teriya – Douhaou

Chebeen Teriya – Douhaou
[DPH051]

Chebeen Teriya

“Douhaou”

Chebeen Teriya is a unique 5 piece band lead by singer/multi-instrumentalist Dramane Bakwan, who brings original music from his homeland of Burkina Faso. From a young age, Dramane participated in the sacred musical traditions of the Gourounsi people of Burkina Faso (West Africa). His insatiable appetite for music drove him to study the myriad of rhythms and melodies of ethnic groups throughout the region. A love of country and continent has inspired him to write over one hundred original songs with lyrics in five languages. His work explores social, environmental, and political themes with the aim of inspiring people to take care of one another and the planet they share.

The album Douhaou is their second release on the label. Nevertheless, this album was chronologically written before the EP Ajabro, which was released last year. It was written in 2018 and was the first time we got connected with Chebeen’s music. It is written in the Djula language (spoken in Burkina Faso, Mali and Ivory Coast) and includes nine tracks in an afro-fusion style, sung by the band’s frontman Dramane Bakwan.

Dramane explains: “Douhaou means benediction or blessings and the album is about social issues. Sabary talks about forgiveness as the way forward in life. Diy is about remembering your roots and honouring your culture as well as those of others. Bimogo is about hypocrisy in politics. Pogo-nere is a love song and Africa is for the whole continent, to unify behind our causes.”

MZ-N710 – X 2900 de La Bourboule à Laqueuille

MZ-N710

Fun Rail association organized, on September 11th, 2021, a journey « on old train » between La Bourboule and Laqueuille stations, in Puy de Dôme, Auvergne Rhône Alpes, France.
The AAATV of Montluçon and SNCF were involved too in the project.
Benefits raised will supply to renew the front of the old cable railway Aval station in La Bourboule.
On the X 2900 « autorail » of AAATV I admired the wonderful landscapes of Dordogne Valley and Sancy mountains that one can discover along the railway line, line on which no passenger train ran since summer of 2015.
I also enjoyed the so peculiar « music » of the « autorail » engine that I recorded going from La Bourboule to Laqueuille.
Like a bonus track, you will find the sound of the engine when the train stopped in La Bourboule, at the end of the journey.
Thanks to Nicolas.

“Flagstaff Mountains”

Some very interesting electronica from new guest artist ‘Escher Adams’ making use of what sounds like random analogue sounds to great effect in Panorama of a busy city at night to the analogue ambience of Polysim. An interesting, and diverse introduction to the world of Escher Adams.

Dolphins Of Venice – Mutuals

Dolphins Of Venice

“Mutuals”

The Dolphins of Venice resurface to allow a rare glimpse into the inner workings of their collectively shambolic yet soothing soundscaping. Drums clatter and disjointed voices echo in and out of fashion. Synths pulse and ebb to a timecode never known above the salty waves. Will you join the dolphins for some brief relief from gravity and bipedal pressure – sink beneath the water and float weightlessly if only for a short time.

nonkel waldek – wenteltrap

nonkel waldek – wenteltrap
[HILIV007]

nonkel waldek

“wenteltrap”

Way back when nonkel waldek wasn’t an uncle, back when phones where dumber but people on time, this tape was made to roam the fields around Brussels with a boombox from Spullenhulp and a re-up from Terneuzen. Wandering through the worry free afternoons of the early two thousands double 00’s meant nothing but a couple of D’s would get you a long way. They packed enough juice to keep the freestyle session going for hours, which could feel like a split second, riding the tip of a high wave, destination eternity, or at least for as long as you wouldn’t choke.

Lost through the moves of time this tape was found in a drawer at the his mum’s house while manically searching for pin codes to his online banking under the pressure of a tax deadline. We have indeed come a long way. But some things don’t change, like a steady boom bap from an MPC2000XL bounced to a cassette, because they are timeless in their own right.

These beats where made for rapping and by God they where rapped too! For the time being that proof remains in the pudding of the uncle’s mind. Or maybe until an other tax deadline rocks around.
