about

Since 2010, many netlabels and artists publish their new free music releases on the clongclongmoo website. Free means that you don't have to pay anything or register to download music. However, you can usually pay something to support the artists. Please note the licenses under which the music is published. This is important to know what you are allowed to do with the music. Please visit the labels' homepages to get the free music. Most files are published under a creative commons licence. At netlabellist you will find an extensive list of websites that also offer (or have offered) free music. If you run a netlabel yourself or offer your music for free and want to draw attention to it, you are welcome to use the submission form. And remember that clongclongmoo is not there to do business, because “Business Is Not My Music.”

Karlheinz Essl – No-Input Mixer Studies

Karlheinz Essl – No-Input Mixer Studies

Karlheinz Essl

“No-Input Mixer Studies”

Karlheinz Essl, born in Vienna in 1960, is a pioneering avant-garde composer known for his groundbreaking work in instrumental and electronic music. Embracing technology from the early 1980s, Essl delved into the realm of computers, where he developed innovative software for algorithmic composition and real-time performance. One of his most influential creations, the RTC-lib (Real Time Composition Library for Max), originated at IRCAM in Paris in 1991 and remains widely used in the computer music community.

In 2022, Essl embarked on a daring exploration of new avenues in electronic music, shifting away from computers and digital tools to embrace the captivating world of analog modular synthesizers. This artistic journey birthed two captivating works: “Coastlines,” a work-in-progress performed on a MakeNoise O-COAST modular synth, and the suite “Throbbing Crystals,” a four-movement masterpiece played on a Doepfer DARK ENERGY synth. In these compositions, Essl discarded conventional keyboards and sequencers, opting instead for non-linear feedback systems that offered chaotic and enthralling sonic landscapes. He likened performing live on this “wild instrument” to riding a spirited horse across Lake Constance, where constant control and adjustment of countless knobs forged an unforgettable sonic trail.

In 2023, Essl ventured further into the uncharted territory of sound by exploring a broken analog mixer he stumbled upon in his studio. Remaining faithful to the concept of non-linear feedback systems, he experimented with different modes of interaction, generating sounds solely by feeding the output back into the input. This unique approach was orchestrated through instrumental control, utilizing faders and knobs to manipulate the sound, with even the slightest finger movement causing dramatic shifts in the sonic output.

In a whirlwind of creativity spanning just three days, from July 3 to 5, 2023, Essl recorded the seven tracks that comprise his magnum opus “Studies for No-Input Mixer.” Each track employed a distinct number of “voices” arranged in counterpoint, paying homage to Conlon Nancarrow’s legendary “Studies for Player Piano,” which served as an inspirational and motivational source, pushing Essl to brave the unexplored territories of sound.

*****

Beyond his remarkable accomplishments as a composer and performer, Essl’s journey in music has been enriched by diverse roles as an improviser, media artist, and software developer. He studied composition under Friedrich Cerha in Vienna and furthered his passion for musicology, completing his studies with a dissertation on Anton Webern. His tenure as composer-in-residence at the Darmstadt Summer School (1990-94) and IRCAM in Paris (1991-93) further fueled his artistic growth.

With a profound affinity for the poetics of serial music, Essl’s pioneering work with computers and algorithmic composition significantly influenced his approach to composition. During the 1990s, he explored innovative projects for the Internet while increasingly immersing himself in the world of improvisation. His prominence as a composer led to his feature at the prestigious Salzburg Festival in 1997.

In addition to his work in instrumental music, Karlheinz Essl is a trailblazer in electronic music, interactive real-time compositions, and sound installations. He crafts software environments to facilitate algorithmic composition and live electronics, allowing him to play his unique computer-based composition setups, as well as an array of instruments ranging from toy piano and electric guitar to analog synthesizers.

Karlheinz Essl’s musical odyssey is one of constant exploration and innovation, pushing the boundaries of modern music aesthetics and leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of contemporary electronic and experimental music.

3 priiises V/A project come back with a new volume.
01 – Sonido Postal – Confluence

Artificially, the audio takes the form of a progressive collage, where the mix of field recordings begins in natural environments, with sounds that represent that spatiality, little by little it mutates towards sounds in which humans have some more direct participation, elucidating little by little a more urban sound, until ending in the noise of the city, which reflects more the industrial part of it.

Confluence portrays a minimal possibility of the differences and similarities that these environments can contain, being able to be appreciated through sound and imaginative visual representation, be it from the lake or the sea, to the city.

The audio is a collection of field recordings made in different places in Argentina, recorded by Damián Alférez:

– Cliffs beach, Mar del Plata (sounds of stones and the sea).
– Laguna de los Padres, Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires (sounds of water, parrots, people, insects).
– Chapadmalal, Buenos Aires (sounds of frogs and dogs).
– Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires (sound of water drops in an apartment).
– Puerto Madryn, Chubut (sounds of the street, angel callers, skates).
– Mar del Plata city center (vehicle sounds, fans, interference).
– José Marmol, Buenos Aires (vehicle sounds, and junk dealer).

Extract from the Casserolade which took place on Monday April 17, 2023 at 8 p.m. in Dole (France). Recording made to document the resistance movement to the anti-democratic politics of Emmanuel Macron.
He did not hesitate to enforce his pension reform using Article 49.3 without a vote from the National Assembly, despite massive opposition from the population to his pension reform project: 93% of the labour force according to a study by the Montaigne Institute published in January 2023 and 80% of the entire population according to an Odoxa-Agipi poll, also published in January 2023. Therefore refusing to take into account the protests that took place for months across the country. Selfassuming the lie of his legitimacy when he was elected on the rejection of the National Gathering only. Spontaneously the population took up the principle of maple spring casseroles to let him know that his lies would never deceive anymore. The whistles announce the moment when the casserolade turns into wild protests.

This illustrates the sound recording that was pictured by Christophe Martin during the protest in support of the victims of the macronie’s henchmen at Sainte-Soline, in order to show that ecological and social struggles have now become inextricably tied up.

[VULP-0227]

Vulpiano Records Sampler EP

“Vol. 17”

Vulpiano Records is proud to present a sprawling chronicle of the transcendent compositions released through the label during 2022, including Netlabel Day, by our generous and talented collaborators for a singular listening experience.

There is a continuous sonic motif of the sublime, and the possible impressions within contain multitudes: time and place, knowing, chaos, Gaia, the vastness of space, death, life, suffering, nirvana…In the long traditions of drone and ambient music, it is a canvas for the listener and an acoustic salve that opens channels new and subtly re-wires our senses.

Breathing out while listening, you sense the artists vaporizing and reshaping the rubble of the last few years – gifting us precious moments to do the same.

The label will likely be on hiatus for the rest of 2023 while we regroup and ascertain where to go from here.

Virtually J

“Reworks”

Long time ago, in the relatively small Black Sea coastal city of Varna, Julian Kalchev a.k.a. Virtually J became a kind of local pioneer and an inspiration for a whole generation, being the first to explore ways to compose and produce electronic music programmed, edited, played on a PC. He’s been important part of the scene since then, contributing, for example, to the essential VA series “Kokaku” on Jisatsuken. We were really excited to release on Mahorka his latest album “Autocracy Mage” in February 2021.

In the vein of the never skipped tradition of preparing and releasing a really special collaborative Mahorka album for Netlabel Day each year (e.g. Fire to the Stars, Captive Portal, krāllār, Teeth of Divine, Tomoroh Hidari, Electrohollyc & MO. reworks albums, the “Music for Elevators vol. 5” VA compilation and a 4T Thieves remixes album), we are more than happy to announce 2023’s release “Virtually J – Reworks”, including new versions of tracks off “Autocracy Mage” (from Toxic Derwish, LR Friberg, Hypnos, Captive Portal, SpaceCherry, 4T Thieves, Asshole Galaxy (Abdicant and Weldroid), Brainquake, Obhod, Fluffy Inside (a.k.a. Pandacetamol), Mas&Delayer, and Julian Kalchev himself in the Autocracy Mage Remix of “Nazka”) and one unreleased original track and an un released Autonomaton remix.

Big Blood – First Aid Kit

Big Blood – First Aid Kit

Big Blood

“First Aid Kit”

Written and recorded at home by Big Blood. All songs by Big Blood except “Ring Telephone Ring” by Barbara Lynn.“She can be a real pain in the ass,” is how Big Blood’s Caleb Mulkerin and Colleen Kinsella describe having their daughter as a member of the band they formed in the wake of Cerberus Shoal’s dissolution. A band made up of family seems like an ideal situation. You get to play with those you love, and practicing/recording is always just a matter of going into the next room. “If you don’t have kids, I can imagine that is an obvious assumption,” Caleb says. “However, if you do have children, I don’t need to explain how much of an emotional mess this can be.” Parents don’t stop being parents, nor do kids stop being kids for band practice. “There are endless amounts of broader ‘life’ examples brought up at any given time while playing with Quinnisa, and I can’t help stopping to discuss them as they come up,” he says. He understands Quinnisa’s position. “She’s rightly annoyed at being parented in a ‘judgment free’ zone. Lots of practices end with her being tossed from the band.”

His issues are nothing, however, to what she brings to the band. Quinnissa, who was 13 when First Aid Kit was recorded has skills. “She’s a total ringer and a complete pro in a live setting,” Mulkerin acknowldges. “She’s a lot more reliable than her grumpy parents.” Indeed, Quinnisa’s voice has developed into an astonishing powerhouse of force. While she has been contributing to Big Blood records almost since birth, First Aid Kit solidifies her clear talent. All her lyrics are improvised in the moment while recording, a real shock to realize considering how insightful and perfectly suited to the song they are. “Never Ending Nightmare” candidly and perfectly describes the anxieties of being a teenager today: “The quiet growing inside me is louder/I should have known not to trust another stranger.” Or the heartache of “1000 Times”: “I think about you at least 1000 times a day/I can’t even say hi/What’s wrong, what’s wrong, what’s wrong with me?” What more, her natural ability to perform amazes her parents. “She’ll be slopping around all practice, and you are convinced she doesn’t have it,” Kinsella says. “Then we record and she nails the guitar and vocals, even does something better. She’s in control.”

Teenage impulses fit right in with the band’s intent, which is making music that’s honest, inclusive and flawed. Inventiveness in the moment wins out over belabored, repeated takes, as the group is in a constant state of creation. Songs sound fully built and realized, but they actually rise out of improvisation. Big Blood channel the moment and let go once they finish. “I think about Ursula Le Guinn and how she talks about everything she takes in becoming compost,” Kinsella says. “It mixes together, and when it comes out there’s all that stuff in it, sometimes it’s direct and sometimes not.” Mulkerin’s descriptions of different songs on the record run like faint recalled dreams. “I don’t remember much other than it flowed from the three of us absurdly quick,” he says of opener “In My Head”. “Haunted” has intriguing lyrics like “I’m haunted by your pictures/That faded like a memory” but, as Mulkerin says, “Colleen is not one to try for things in any sort of premeditated way, it just flows and evolves.” Many songs touch on the fear and horrors outside a safe home space, fitting for a record made during COVID. They sing about their feelings in the moment, so lyrics are often topical. “Makes Me Wonder” is about Ma’kihia Bryant, a 16 year-old black girl shot by police (“Be still the mess you make/The life you squeeze, you take,” and later in the song…”She should be alive today.”)

While any fan of the band will tell you that no two albums sound very much alike, First Aid Kit displaying for the first time their affinity for the emotional effects of bands like The Cure, Bauhaus and The Clean, there’s a clear thread throughout all their records. First, there’s Kinsella’s voice, which pivots from upbeat fun to pure dread, presumably based on how she was feeling that day she recorded. Secondly, Mulkerin’s production preserves layers of could-have-beens by keeping the ghostly presence of past takes alive in the background of tracks like subliminal thoughts. Their songs achieve the double satisfaction of being immediate, catchy and memorable, while also revealing inner depths at repeated listens. Some of the best experimental music is cloaked as mundane.

First Aid Kit was recorded entirely at the family’s home onto 1” eight-track tape. It achieves the magic of capturing a moment and making a lasting impression. There aren’t many family bands, and there’s definitely no other band like this.

Prima Limón – Arena

Prima Limón – Arena

Prima Limón

“Arena”

One Tru Odd

“Hits For The Misplaced”

One Tru Odd has been around longer than intended or expected, mostly helping other people’s talents shine – as much as the people in question would let him. He has been, and probably will continue being, in more other artists’ bands than reasonable and has done more unprofitable music for theatre than is considered decent. When time allows for it, One Tru Odd releases music under the aliases V.K., Bissquit, and Bassquit, none of which are real human names. “Hits for the Misplaced” is his second outing as One Tru Odd after 2021’s “This E.P”. As per his music, his opinion of humanity is fairly favourable.
