“Bocetos, Diarios y Sonidos 2”

Imagine an ear free from the laws of perspective created by humans, an ear free from the prejudices of compositional logic, an ear that doesn’t respond to the name of everything but must know each object it encounters in life through a perception adventure. How many sounds are there in a field of grass for a crawling baby to be unaware of the sound of “green”? How many rainbows can light create for the inexperienced ear? How aware can that ear be of variations in heat waves? Imagine a world full of incomprehensible objects, shimmering with an infinite variety of movements and countless shades of color. Envision a world before words and sound, not to be merely imitated, but to be combined according to our fantasy. Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

Skyjelly

“Spirit Guide مرشد حقيقة (Mahorka Edition)”

Released January 27, 2024 as free (cc) digital download and special limited edition digipak CD.

Last July saw the release of “Spirit Guide” – a brilliant EP from Skyjelly out of Boston, Massachusetts, which was definitely one of 2023’s highlights in the music world! Now, in partnership with I Heart Noise (out of Boston too, who did the original release) and Wormhole World (UK) we’ve prepared an expanded rerelease foray, also bringing a sweet dejavu of collectible editions on CD!

Original can be found here

“Wandering vocals fall somewhere between David Byrne when he gets weird and David Bowie on a good day” – Dig Boston

“Makes me think of “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts” -Byrne/Eno Just as inventive. But its own entity. Somehow both catchy and experimental. Well done.” – Joe Imwalle (Aux Meadows)

All three expanded editions feature the 6 original EP tracks and additional 4 unreleased tracks from the “Spirit Guide” sessions.

The I Heart Noise (US) “Deluxe Edition” features 2 additional Skyjelly tracks – “Providence (Episode One)” and “Motorola Monkey”, previously available as video singles.

Wormhole World (UK)’s edition features 2 special hidden bonus tracks.

And our “Mahorka Edition” features stunning reworks of the original “Spirit Guide” EP tracks by Brainquake, Zonevreemd and Toxic Derwish, alongside 3 older but golden remixes of Skyjelly tracks by Lord of Overstock, the Third Kind Records founder Nicholas Langley and Grayscape. First two of these older remixes have previously been available as bonus tracks on Skyjelly’s “Blank Panthers / Priest, Expert, or Wizard” 2023 version and the Grayscape remix has been so far unreleased.

Overthrive – Uncharted Realms

Overthrive – Uncharted Realms
[foot291]

Overthrive

“Uncharted Realms”

“Uncharted Realms” is a testament to the limitless possibilities of electronic music. It’s a neural expedition where the boundaries between the real and the imagined blur, and the listener is invited to lose themselves in a world where the future and the primal coexist. With its crispy drums, unknown sound effects, and visionary soundscapes, this album is not just a collection of songs; it’s a portal to a sonic kingdoms where sound becomes an immersive, transformative experience. The soundscapes within the album are nothing short of otherworldly. Pulsating basslines ebb and flow like cosmic tides, while shimmering drones dance through the air, creating an atmosphere that feels simultaneously alien and familiar. The album’s sonic palette is enriched with mysterious and unknown sound effects, as if the very fabric of the music is being woven with threads of undiscovered technology and extraterrestrial energy.

Charles Rice Goff III – Calumet

“Calumet”

Calumet
by Charles Rice Goff III

1 Concordant
2 Accommodating
3 Liberated
4 Uncontentious
5 Modest
6 Eleemosynary
7 Thoughtful

Calumet was produced between May, 2023, and January, 2024. All performances, recordings, editing, production, cover art, etc. by Charles Rice Goff III. No artificial intelligence was employed in molding this presentation.

Instrumentation:

Kikkerland “Make Your Own Music Box” Kit
Korg R3 Vocoder/Synthesizer
Yamaha VSS-30 Sampler/Synthesizer
Boss RC 20X Loop Station Loop Duplicator
Panasonic Portable Cassette Tape Recorder
Canon Digital Camera Recorder

Software:

Amazing MIDI Wave-To-MIDI Converter
Polysoft MIDI to Mp3 Converter
Midisoft MIDI Scorewriter
Musescore MIDI Scorewriter
Roxio 2011 Sound Recorder
Cool Edit Pro II Multitrack Recorder
Audacity Multitrack Recorder
Several Plug-In Audio Sound Effects

Process:

The Kikkerland “Make Your Own Music Box” kit is akin to a miniature player-piano. The device functions entirely without electronics or spring winding. Music is composed by punching holes into strips of paper. The strips are loaded into, and hand-cranked through, a small device in which the holes trigger chime sounds corresponding to musical notes. Alternative versions of these paper-strip compositions can be created by simply loading the strips into the device upside-down, backwards, or upside-down AND backwards. In addition, tempos and rhythms can be altered by simply altering the manner in which the hand-crank is turned.

Goff began this project by punching out patterns of holes on four paper strips. He “played” each strip in various ways, recording all the variants through the open-air microphones of a digital camera.

He converted some of the digital recordings into MIDI files, which he then modified with score-writing software. This process allowed the chime sounds to be transposed into sounds produced by a variety of virtual instruments. Goff also used score-writers to orchestrate and rearrange some of the converted sounds.

He recorded some of the digital recordings onto cassette tapes, which he then played through a vocoder, run through a loop duplicator. This process employed a wide variety of sound and rhythm-altering effects to create new textures and atmospheres from the original music box compositions. Several improvised sessions were recorded during this process, each producing unique results.

He input short bits of the recorded cassettes into a sampler keyboard, equipped with its own small bank of sound effects. He plugged the keyboard through the vocoder and the loop duplicator. Playing the samples through this set-up resulted in producing entirely new melodies and textures from the original music box compositions. Several improvised sessions were recorded during this process, each producing unique results.

Finally, Goff edited together the finished recordings of the Calumet collection by strategically mixing together select portions of all of the above sound experiments.

Titling:

The naming of this collection and all of its parts was an ever-evolving process. The preliminary raw recordings were given names corresponding alphabetically to the names of fruits (Apple, Banana, Casaba, Durian). In October, 2023, Goff offered one of the mixes from the still-incomplete collection of recordings to Aural Films for its “Horror Films 2023” compilation, entitling it “The Sanguinary Hacking Of Torakusu Yamaha.” This title refers to how the creation of the piece involved original methods of playing (ie: “hacking”) a Yamaha VSS-30 Sampler/Synthesizer (Torakusu founded the Yamaha Corporation in the late 1800s).

During the fall and winter of 2023/2024, as the final phases of the Calumet project ran their courses, Goff bore witness to endless media reports of increasingly violent conflicts around the globe. Combatants of all stripes recklessly killed and wounded thousands of people and casually destroyed every other living thing in their vicinity. Reacting to this surge in global violence, Goff chose the album and song titles that appear in this collection.

Some Additional Notes:

1) A calumet is a smoking pipe used by native Americans during ceremonies that establish peaceful relations among groups of people.

2) Some of the improvised recordings created during the production of this album were edited into the soundtrack of Goff’s video: “Sequence Of Non Sequitur,” released in November, 2023, at the link below:

Alaskaapenas – Minimalism is the new maximalism
[mi309]

Alaskaapenas

“Minimalism is the new maximalism”

Once upon a time he was Yamashita Takuya, now he appears on MiMi Records with a new release and with a new alter-ego, Alaskaapenas.

“Minimalism is the new maximalism”, is a 20 minutes EP where the beats merge with the ambient.

From minimalist lo-fi to more relaxed chill, Alaskaapenas offers us a quick trip through four different but nostalgic destinations and for that reason it’s quite possible that we’ll press play after finishing the first ride.
A must listening!

3. Motu proprio. 4:50
4. Podorozh. 3:17
5. Ama tu ritmo, Chiara. 10:27
6. Despedida. 4:52

ASI-3 – Altered States

ASI-3 – Altered States
[Nu-Logic098]

ASI-3

“Altered States”

It has been almost four years since our last release, and that’s why we are back with a very special release. Introducing ASI-3, a Spanish producer based in London, who presents to us, after releasing some singles in recent years, his first full-length release. “Altered States” is an album where the artist explores themes of anxiety, loneliness, fear, and rejection. Through sonic experimentation, ASI-3 employs his own field recordings captured in his daily life in a city that gradually engulfs you until you become a part of it without even realizing. These glimpses of a sonic diary are fused with passages of raw electronica and industrial textures, making “Altered States” a work that may require attentive listening but holds the promise of ultimate gratification or understanding. Electronic, IDM, Ambient, Techno — a full sonic palette at the disposal of an artist eager to shout to the world and with a strong determination to learn to live with his own demons. An intimate and complex listening experience that we at Nulogic Netlabel wholeheartedly recommend.

Sarah Peebles – In the Canopy

Sarah Peebles – In the Canopy
[PAN 110]

Sarah Peebles

“In the Canopy”

“In 2003 I was invited to Aotearoa by Matthew Leonard, the producer of the programme Revolutions Per Minute†, to create a new radio work that would draw from Aotearoa’s natural landscapes. On the North and South Islands and while in transit back to Canada through Singapore, I recorded sounds of birds, insects, amphibians and rivers. The essence of my experiences listening to the abundance of life surrounding me, often out of sight, was reflected in a phrase that came up in conversation while visiting the Kāpiti coast: that which is just beyond our perception. The essence of my spending long, focused periods of time in nature while recording and while simply being – taking time – doesn’t easily translate into words for me; it’s nonverbal. The tree canopy, the bushes, ground, air and waters held life I could often hear but couldn’t see: insect buzz and hums floating on the breeze, birds chattering in distance treetops, mysterious rummaging above my head, sudden exuberant birdsong bursting from nearby bushes. As the presence of beings shifted into my awareness, I began to ponder my initial interpretation of that phrase, wondering, exactly what was just beyond my perception? Were animals such as the kaka above (parrots, perhaps watching me) or an emerging cicada, perceivable? At what point was shifting weather beyond my ability to perceive? Or the larger view: the complexity of the biosphere with Earth’s constantly evolving micro and macro communities of living things, with their individual lives, habitats and interconnections – which aspects of this infinite feedback loop lay just beyond our perception?

While in Paraparaumu, across from Kapiti Island, Kāpiti coast resident Gary Millan shared with me some of his thoughts and knowledge about the Māori Ngā kete o te Wānanga (Baskets of Knowledge). Referring to the third basket, Te Kete Tuatea (basket of light), he’d brought up the concept of “that which is just beyond our perception.” Twenty years later, I have only now come to understand and appreciate Gary’s Māori context of the phrase. This knowledge kete, Te Kete Tuatea, “is mindful of, and pays attention to, the past, our spiritual realities, the importance of space and time, and tikanga (customs), as well as kawa (ceremonial rituals).”1 In speaking about that which is just beyond our perception, Gary was referring to ways of knowing the world around us that are inherent to Māori ancestral experience and culture (and to many Indigenous cultures): a knowledge acquired through living one’s life on the land that involves a subconscious knowledge, a sensibility, of things to come, as opposed to quantifying or analyzing our senses or experiences as we might through a science-oriented lens. This includes a dimension of the universe or cosmos beyond “the world of sense perception, the natural world around us” (yet available to seers and sages) held to be ultimate reality, Tua-Atea.2,4

I, as a guest in Aotearoa, chose to reflect on my visceral experiences and North American sensibilities in the places I recorded sound3, savouring landscapes totally unfamiliar to me whose rhythms were beyond my grasp. This soundwork reflects those sonic, psychological and embodied explorations.

The unique relationships between Aotearoa’s native plants, their historic pollinators (native birds and bees) and people can be heard in that landscape: in rich and diverse birdsong, plants rustling in breezes, subtle wing beats of digger bees hovering over sandy slopes, in the sounds of gathering and weaving of harakeke and wharariki (flax). These sounds are a fraction of the abundance and diversity of what once existed in these islands, particularly before deforestation & introduced species that occurred with European settlement – and with ongoing industrial agriculture, apiculture (with introduced bee species), industry, invasive rodents and climate change. However, these voices and the relationships they reflect, continue to thrive. They are in process. They continue to instruct, compel, inspire and inform the identity, cultures and practices of all people in Aotearoa and others (like me) who experience this incredible, dynamic place.

The forest canopy here and everywhere supports much that we cannot perceive and do not (yet) know – some of which we hear, smell, touch, see and feel; all of which is connected. The canopy itself, the life within her (including ourselves), the soil beneath her, the water she filters, the oxygen she creates, the weather she generates & moderates – all interweave to create this place, this Earth, as we know her. She is Papatuanuku, a living organism.4”
