Pedro Maras – Tipping Point

Pedro Maras – Tipping Point
[mhrk261]

Pedro Maras

“Tipping Point”

“The IPCC AR5 defines a tipping point as an irreversible change in the climate system. It states that the precise levels of climate change sufficient to trigger a tipping point remain uncertain, but that the risk associated with crossing multiple tipping points increases with rising temperature.

In the context of climate change, an “adaptation tipping point” has been defined as “the threshold value or specific boundary condition where ecological, technical, economic, spatial or socially acceptable limits are exceeded.

Tipping point behaviour in the climate can also be described in mathematical terms. Tipping points are then seen as any type of bifurcation with hysteresis. Hysteresis is the dependence of the state of a system on its history. For instance, depending on how warm and cold it was in the past, there can be differing amounts of ice present on the poles at the same concentration of greenhouse gases or temperature

In a study inspired by “mathematical and statistical approaches to climate modelling and prediction”, the authors identify three types of tipping points in open systems such as the climate system – bifurcation, noise-induced and rate-dependent. The idea of tipping points in climate science, as indicated by palaeoclimate data and global climate models, suggest that the “climate system may abruptly ‘tip’ from one regime to another in a comparatively short time.

Bifurcation-induced tipping refers to changes in dynamical systems that occur when a small smooth change made to bifurcation parameters of the system causes an abrupt or sudden topological change in the behavior of the system. In the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), slow passage to the bifurcation parameters – the salinity, temperature and density of water – could cause the AMOC to abruptly collapse when it reaches a critical tipping point. Currents of warm, seawater in the upper layers of the Atlantic flow north, while currents of colder, deep waters from the North Atlantic flow south, like a conveyor belt known as thermohaline circulation. Downwelling occurs when the warmer, higher-density seawater accumulates and sinks beneath the colder, lower density less saline water from glacier melt. An AMOC collapse would occur if downwelling was inhibited . [critical slowing down] (CSD) “occurs because a restoring feedback is weakening as a bifurcation-type tipping point is approached.

Noise-induced tipping refers to transitions due to random fluctuations or internal variability of the system, as in the Dansgaard-Oeschger events during the last glacial period, with 25 occurrences of rapid climate fluctuations.

Rate-induced tipping occurs in an “excitable system” – such as peatlands – when one of the systems parameters is “ramped” through a “steady, slow and monotonic change” eliciting a “large excitable response”. In the case of peatlands, the rate-induced tipping point results in an “explosive release of soil carbon from peatlands into the atmosphere” – “compost bomb instability”.”

“Isolation”

“40 minutes of isolation. 40 minutes of bad news, good news, self-doubts and tears. 40 minutes of motivation, being tired and being sad and happy at the same time. all the silence at night, at day, deep inside has grown to noise, to walls of noise waiting to be born out of the darkness. 40 minutes… every second is a witness of the fall and the rise of a lost soul.”

Austin Rockman – Plum God

Austin Rockman – Plum God
[mhrk259]

Austin Rockman

“Plum God”

Experiential composer Austin Rockman paints upon the canvas of silence with seemingly supernatural projections of sound. These amalgamations point towards tones of an almost uncertain origin and are very much characterized by a certain place in time. His debut album ‘Plum God’ represents a transitory state. An uncertainty, which brings along states of confusion, exhaustion, intensity.. coexisting within these emotions resides hope and the inevitable beauty and gravity of consciousness. We are swayed like trees against an invisible wind, currents that press upon us, like shores, constantly reoccurring and reemerging from a seemingly infinite source. Beyond us. This elusive control navigates our existence, and in this sway we must have trust in ourselves, this is only the beginning..

As Austin Rockman’s debut on Mahorka “Plum God” has been revisited, on tape, and with the “bonus” track (tape322), this is only the beginning..

Press Coverage:

‘Plum God is a beautiful reminder of human fragility, and a welcomed breath of fresh air in an environment too often symbolized by a seductive superficiality.ʼ – Massimo Ricci/Touching Extremes

‘Beautifully mangled sound rests on the periphery of conscious awareness, pulling the mind back from untethered states with anxious and processed machinelike errors and blurred distortions of texture.ʼ – Tone Harvest

‘The symbiosis he develops between the beckoning of the music and the willing acquiescence of the ear and mind makes this album a bracing experience.ʼ -Andrew Forell/Dusted Magazine

Sinage

“MM”

MM is an industrial music-inspired EP by Sinage. It’s a journey back in time, to the roots of Sinage sound – noisy yet still melodic synths, banging metal sounding percussion, and methodical machine-like rhythms.

MM is a metal machine, alive and cold. Full of madness, sadness, and curiosity to explore life all around.

Solal

“Litanies”

Glitch, digital accidents or acoustic samples, the musical atmospheres that Solal creates with Joseph underline by their theatricality the dark and inexorable destiny of the heroes. Adolescent incantations, ecological stories, the interpretations of the young artist pay homage to the great epics of literature such as Dune, the ancient tragedies, or to the tradition of oral tales.

Ivano Pecorini – Barons Court

Ivano Pecorini – Barons Court
[mhrk258]

Ivano Pecorini

“Barons Court”

Ivano Pecorini is a composer and sound artist based in London, whose works move across experimental approaches and aesthetic investigations, focused on the manipulation and mixture between concrete materials, synthesis and acoustic instruments. His body of work maintains both a sharp creative focus and a wide-eyed spirit of exploration, creating unexpected electronic soundscapes.

Nowadays, the vast possibilities of instrumental choices further lead many composers to create their own compositional environments, including limitations and defects, to better explore particular sonic fields, in all their facets and micro-variations. This is why, to compose Barons Court, Ivano developed a system of four electromagnets that are controlled by Max/MSP. Each electromagnet allows for the vibration of some piano strings, producing modulated soundscapes, textures, and melodies.

Brainquake – The Ongoing Sequence Of Events

Brainquake – The Ongoing Sequence Of Events
[mhrk257]

Brainquake

“The Ongoing Sequence Of Events”

“Tick tock tick. Time trickles away softly and time flows off hard, steadfast as ever. Time travel might make you dream off but you cannot stop time or turn back, even if that is your dearest wish. The hourglass is running, at that steady pass, water is flowing, an ongoing stream, and everything we do or did is in the past. Time is ticking and will not stop, not for anyone, not ever …”

Unlike on his debut EP on Mahorka – a trip through abstract territories, blending dissonants and rough waves of emotion rumbling, here on this 9 track album Brainquake explores common songstructures and sounds. Overtones, dissonants and layers still provide that emotional layer but with a softness uncommon for his works. There is even some optimism in the sound palette and melodies? In sound it kind of reminds of those great 90’s electronica/ambient/idm albums we all grew up with but adding that minimal touch and rhythms and some more contemporary production. As a whole this album evolves presenting a changing approach to a constant, common sequence. Variations on a theme but quite diverse. All tracks are at 110 beats per minute and as the ongoing sequence flows on, it showcases the different interplay of underlays and thrifty build up.

As most albums this one is best listened to in full but that doesn’t minimalize the vigour of the compositions by themselves. Take your time and use the strength of repetition. Sleep, snooze, listen, dance to it, it’s ambient, idm, experimental, leftfield, pop and endzeit emotronica as much as it is not.

Janne Nummela – Preserve Energy Because the Struggle is Long
[mhrk256]

Janne Nummela

“Preserve Energy Because the Struggle is Long”

IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH GRASPING THE DIVISION OF LABOUR BETWEEN MAN AND MACHINE

“There are obviously various musical directions and techniques going on in this album. A variety of sound sources and instruments are introduced. Abandoning specialization and sliding towards universality produces thriving musical diversity but also easily ends up to the dilettantism, which I have not been that much afraid of.

How many instruments I really played on this album? The answer is unambiguous. I am a guitarist, so I play guitar (on tracks 1, 2 and 10). Track 8 is played on the guitar, but the sound source is a virtual instrument violin (Embertone’s Joshua Bell violin by guitar to MIDI, no Max/MSP involved). Playing gestures of violin (sampled) and guitar (played by me) are entirely different in nature. So what is the point of playing violin by the guitar? Just to have fun.

This is an album about wanting to travel more and see new things. I’m shy as hell and bad at talking to people and I’ve been unhappy for ages because of it. I need to just say yes to things it’s so easy to say no to. This album is for that ✨

I can’t thank anyone who takes the time to listen to it enough – you are my heroes! Having someone to listen to some of the nonsense I write is so validating and I love you all. Writing this got me through so much! 🌈🌈🌈
