BeatMyth – One Hand Clap

BeatMyth – One Hand Clap
[KAM024]

BeatMyth

“One Hand Clap “

Myth: a sacred story, a set of beliefs, a way to make sense of the world, to connect the dots. A notion that is also the name of one of the first tracks made by BeatMyth (in 2007). It was one of many pieces in that raw and forward-thinking style, characteristic for the next half decade. But, the mythical narrative can be said to have started in Novo mesto, that town just halfway between Ljubljana and Zagreb. Exchanging the guitar and the amp with two turntables was the best deal ever. And there we also have the beginnings of the praised jazz-funk-rock group Moveknowledgment, and PlankTon’s turntables and records were part of it. Dance parties soon ensued at the local pub and the locals were going bat-shit-crazy, driven by the fast jump-up breakbeat science from the UK. It was all LTJ Bukem’s fault. And perhaps Fatboy Slim’s too.

After a few years in the urban setting of Ljubljana, there was more and more electronic music knowledge on the table. Igor and his flatmate Mitja Pritržnik were dabbling in writing and production, laying down some charged breakbeat tracks, inviting N’toko – PlankTon’s partner MC at many drum’n’bass gigs – for an ad-hoc recording session. And Mitja’s sister giveth the project the name. At the backdrop of that time were musical influences such as Adam Freeland and Hyper, gigs with the “Illegal crew”, a drum’n’bass crew on the rise, and production discussions with its chief MarkoMan. Lots of hours of tedious work behind the computer resulted in BeatMyth’s debut: “Your Own Two Heads”, an industrial electro-punk collection of bangers.

In the poetics of this work, one can sense the history of personal musical growth: the beginnings in doom metal and the sense of immediacy of jump-up and harder strains of drum’n’bass. Active as a DJ in the last decade, PlankTon moved exceedingly firmly into the contemporary breakbeat scene, very much in line with what can be found on BeatMyth’s first two albums. However, proper appreciation of this project is not possible without taking into account the live performance of PlankTon and N’toko, who have until now always presented BeatMyth in an outgoing onslaught of beats, basslines, synth-stabs, and fast vocal ranting, animating many a sleepy auditorium into something akin to a small riot. And to furthermore bring the tentacles of this project’s context to light, it must be said that at the core of the project stands a multiskilled producer and audio engineer, whose areas of work go beyond mere clicking around his DAW: robotics workshops for kids, technical support for art installations, analogue synthesizer repairs, audio studio building, mastering and mixing a variety of different projects, and live sound.

And finally, this, the third album maturely brings up musical material created through a different approach, a different attitude, and mixes it up with that signature outgoing electro-punk vibe of the previous two albums. This attitude is purposefully playful. It’s a move away from the dance floor, away from the dictate of the live spectacle into an exploration of sound-based sample-heavy trickery. Still, it by no means represents an abandonment of the basic, ever-present principle, the pillar of this sound: firm musical decisiveness and a never-ending search for dynamics in balance.

“Self-Doubt Mountain”

Introspective drone / ambient / noise / shoegaze album. This album is about yearning for the deeper meaning of things, asking yourself if you really want to climb those steep slopes that drive you further and deeper into the mountain range. Why do we crave what is out of reach? Why do we want the unsustainable? What drives some to blindly follow their dream while others settle for the safe obscurity? Photo by Sandra Vallaure.

Red Kite – #1

Red Kite – #1
[pn119]

Red Kite

“#1”

“Red Kite” (‘Cometa Roja’ in Spanish) is a project by Sergio Sánchez, sound artist and anointed experimental musician in Murcia (Spain), that is born from the need to bring together several of his scattered works that did not follow the aesthetic criteria of his better known alias, ‘Jazznoize‘.

These compositions are differentiated by the use of distinct sound sources. While with ‘Jazznoize‘, the principle element for sonic experimentation is the field recording, with ‘Red Kite‘ it is precisely the opposite, electronic music as a compositional basis for generating sound structures that participate in what Kim Cascone called ‘Aesthetic of error’, centered on the less complacent drone and ambient genres. The post-digital sounds, with the use of software and instruments such as samplers and some low fi synthesizers, are the principle reference coupled with a Marxist ideological posture in the conception of his works.

An example of this is his new work under this pseudonym. It is titled ‘#1‘, and brings together topics inspired by some moments of the twentieth century, such as the revolution in Germany organized by the Spartakus League, or the Argentine dictatorship with his criticism of the 1978 World Cup that celebrated goals while a genuine genocide and the suppression of liberties was occuring, and also the revindication of revolutionary and anti-imperialist Marxism by a well known figure, Ernesto Che Guevara. The other two recordings move away from the political commitment to concetrate on highlighting figures like the composer Eliane Radigue. And in the case of ‘Olimpo’ (Olympus) it is a stylistic exercise, a simple re-reading of the previous themes using samplers from some micro-sounds. The most significant influences for generating the textures of ‘Red Kite‘ are Oval (his first works), Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Adam Pacione, Alva Noto, but with an isolationist edge in his sound and with a sense of repetition as a nodular element that redirects the noises and the melodies of his compositions.”

Blit – Fauna ficcion

Blit – Fauna ficcion
[M023]

Blit

“Fauna ficcion”

Blit – Fauna ficción

Blit is a well-known talented chilean producer who adds to the catalog of Modismo with a new proof of his versatility.
‘Repite’, track that opens the album, manages to outline the ground in which ‘Fauna Ficción’ moves, as a smoke screen we pass through to go all over a work where experimentation in electronic music is addressed with a ludic spirit.
This way, he is able to approach these compositions to a more restless instrumental pop, crossing over intricate keyboard sounds at dark low frecuencies that works as counterpoint. It is a careful production of the rhythmic patterns that sounds updated with contemporary urban rhythms and with a strong accent on hip-hop derivatives.
The centerpiece of this Blit’s new delivery are the three parts of ‘Exilio’, being the second one the moment in greater tune with the dancefloor. The album closes with ‘Morel’, a track that seems to recall Richard D. James’ legacy, though it ends up shaking the nostalgic off with a powerful rhythmic dose.
In less than 20 minutes ‘Fauna Ficción’ succeedes in introducing us into a world that catches us, captivating our ear with fresh sounds and keeping our feet in constant motion thanks to its playful beats. Seven tracks that only confirm Blit’s huge potential and the good times for the electronic music production that prevails in today’s Chile.

Bralitz – Bralitz

Bralitz – Bralitz
[BSMX0155]

Bralitz

“Bralitz”

“Bralitz is a one-man-band who plays guitar, drums and percussion, piano, bass, harmonica, ukulele and sings songs he writes himself. He randomly chose the name Bralitz (a small town in North Eastern Germany) for no real reason other than its simplicity and the fact he often goes there to participate in a music festival organized by his friends. Bralitz draws inspiration from classics of various genres, i.e. rock ’n roll, folk, bossa nova, chanson, and manouche, to name a few. Using multi-track recording, he performs all the parts on most of his songs and sings most of the harmonies to his own lead vocals.”

So that’s the official bio. I’ll only add that this little collection of songs packs a melodic punch with thematic ties running throughout. You’ll likely find yourself putting the album on repeat for a while.

A very special thanks to Bralitz for the terrific EP! Welcome to the blocSonic fam!

“Volatile”

This album is about volatile things and moments. Friendships, relationships, life, random situations. It’s about the importance of finding yourself, knowing yourself, not losing track of what’s important. Getting used to navigate through the acid burns that life flings at you, but also learning to understand others, learning to understand yourself. This album is meant to be listened at home alone at 3 AM. Considering other people don’t appreciate loud sounds at 3 AM you might want to use headphones.

Tracks 1 and 2 feature instrument samples by Amir Baghiri and samples from the movie Still Alice.

Track 3 features samples from the series Making a Murderer and the movies Reservoir Dogs, Drunken Master and Zero Theorem.

Tracks 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 feature spoken word passages read from the book The Vegetarian.

Track 9 features samples from the movie Zero Theorem, Curtis Hoard Videogames, The Straight Road and from a random 80s educational video on Missile Guidance Systems.

Tracks 10 and 11 features samples from the series Fargo.

Track 11 features sample from the movie Deadpool.

All other sounds in this album were conjured by Filipe ‘ps’ Cruz using Jeskola Buzz. Mixed down using Reaper.

Baradit – Electro Lines

Baradit – Electro Lines
[pn118]

Baradit

“Electro Lines”

“Of a tranquil but sure evolution, and generous in melodies that awaken the ear insistently, and to the precise extent, is this new album by the Valparaiso based electronic musician Baradit, a key figure in the scene constructed with machines and danceable beats in studios and clubs in the Fifth Region, being one of the founders of the excellent netlabel Epa Sonidos in 2001.

In this work, the author passes comfortably through many of the influences that have permeated his creation over time, always with interesting results, from musical movements that have remained in perpetuity due to their importance and teachings, such as the EBM, or the ever present and transformable synth pop, techno and other aspects that coexist within the most welcoming and evocative universe of electronics.

Scenes well built and cemented in electro beats, analog basses of good company, notes suggestive of contemplative feelings, are the basis of several of his compositions, like ‘Pruss Pruss’, ‘Guitar Day’, ‘Ocean’, ‘I Need’, to name a few. A good invitation to explore the electro pop happening outside the limits of our self-absorbed and centralized reality. Certainly, a pleasant experience.”

Elsa Bergman + Óscar Santis – Errante
[pn117]

Elsa Bergman + Óscar Santis

“Errante”

“Elsa Bergman (double bass) and Óscar Santis (Likembe, mixer, soundboxes, effects, computer), deliver us a generous recording of their first encounter as a duo of improvisers. The album, called Errante, was conceived in its fullness in the magical landscapes of Amereida.

The result is translated in a mixture of exquisite and varietal languages, distinguished by the hypnotic seduction corresponding to the interpretation of Elsa Bergman, who in accordance with her worldview manages to articulate a more onomatopoeic and percussive line as compared to Óscar Santis, the owner of a structured and ferrous sonic vocabulary.

These conversations, generated in an autopoietic state, deliver us soundscapes cemented with Nordic emulsions and the saline corrosion accumulated for decades in the territory of Ciudad Abierta (Open City).

The atmosphere that Errante offers us is divided in seven electrifying cuts, with “Autopista” being the most extensive track (12:05), which ends in magnificent fashion this exchange of musical expectations y concerns that pass through the fields of minimalist electronica and the indelible legacy of free-jazz.”

Ffiper – VESNA

Ffiper – VESNA
[SCL192]

Ffiper

“VESNA”

Vitaldo Conte (Pulsional Gender Art, Avanguardia 21, 2011)

Browne/Thompson/Sanderson – Solitude, Reef and the Starry Veil
[LOR 090]

Browne/Thompson/Sanderson

“Solitude, Reef and the Starry Veil”

For their second release the trio of Mark Browne (collected objects and saxophones), Daniel Thompson (acoustic guitar) and Richard Sanderson (melodeon and small instruments) continue their exploration of a particularly arcane form of free improvisation, creating music that varies from ritual-like percussive sound environments to microscopically intense interplay. Returning to the glorious acoustics of the Girl Guide hut in Aylesbury which produced their much praised first album, the trio dig deeper into their own utterly unique soundworld to create a music which is fascinating, recondite and very human.
