Since 2010, many netlabels and artists publish their new free music releases on the clongclongmoo website. Free means that you don't have to pay anything or register to download music. However, you can usually pay something to support the artists. Please note the licenses under which the music is published. This is important to know what you are allowed to do with the music. Please visit the labels' homepages to get the free music. Most files are published under a creative commons licence. At netlabellist you will find an extensive list of websites that also offer (or have offered) free music. If you run a netlabel yourself or offer your music for free and want to draw attention to it, you are welcome to use the submission form. And remember that clongclongmoo is not there to do business, because “Business Is Not My Music.”

Lluvia Acida – Ciencia Sur
“We are musicians who live and create at the edge of the world, who over two decades have worked to represent through sound and image various aspects of our habitat. ‘Ciencia Sur‘ (Southern Science) continues this trajectory, addressing the subject of field research. This work was conceived as a musical and audiovisual journey through the imposing landscapes of Patagonia and Antarctica, where science is developed in extreme conditions, as it seeks to answer transcendental questions about the past, present and future of the planet we inhabit.

The composition and recording of these works developed between July and September, combining the use of synthesizers with the use of unusual resources, such as the recording of sounds and electromagnetic emissions emitted by laboratory instruments and the conversion into sound of fossil images and diagrams concerning Climate Change through special software. We launched it in the framework of the opening of the IX Latin American Congress of Antarctic Science, an event that in early October 2017 brought together more than 300 researchers in the city of Punta Arenas (Chile).

The presentation of these works is accompanied by images provided by the Department of Communications and Education of the Chilean Antarctic Institute, which shows excavations in Cerro Guido (Torres del Paine commune), marine studies in the Magallanes channels, and images of the last two versions of the Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ECA), the latter including recordings made with drones on Chilean scientific bases in the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetlands.

For us, it is very important to link art with the science that is being realized in the territory that we inhabit, because we believe that being of the Magallanes concerns not only knowing about our regional past, but also in imagining a future based on the search for knowledge. This work is dedicated to the women and men who study both the remote past and the uncertain future, entering the southern bastions. There, between the wind and the ice, they are discovering the keys to our destiny.”

A Quote from Shakespeare’s The Tempest inspired me to see how relevant the story is against todays lives and politics? Little has changed, people are still seeking revenge or power, but hopefully like in the story love for each other will eventually win the day. A dream perhaps but a nice one to think that eventually we will put our differences behind us and start to trust and teach other.

“Tides”

David Evan Krebs – Tides
This is music for sound explorers who want to explore the canyons of sound but keep near the touchstone of melody. David Alan Krebs’ “Tides” discovers gently evolving drone sounds and, in particular, the textures within sound variations. Each track feels like a visit to a garden of diverse Baja California—each piece is distinct, solitary, spiky in its own way, and pleasantly alien. The pieces range from less than a minute to a few minutes each. The listener is pulled into a single musical in each track, which is investigated thoroughly and dispassionately. Listening is a pleasure rather than a laboratory explosion. Every piece presents the listener with its own bit of sonic intrigue. This is music that is clinical in its experiments while retaining its humanity. The artist eschews beats, time-signature-melodies, and pat ambient themes. Instead, pieces like “Draping Slowly” and “Crevices” contain music which neither panders to nor pulverizes the listener. No two pieces are faintly alike, but all the pieces fit well together. In “Cloud Base (Stage Two)” the drone hovers in that angelic space between the familiar and the strange, where the insights feel within grasp but the conclusions are wordless. The dozen tracks which make up “Tides” are ideal listening for an Autumn day, or an autumnal mood. David Alan Krebs takes us on a journey, and we are delighted to hike along.

“No Cure For Music”

Daniel Robert Lahey – No Cure For Music
Daniel Robert Lahey wields the tools of a trained classical musician in pursuit of ambient music with direct and fresh (but never simple) melodic charms. Each of his pieces bears a symphonic influence, but each piece aims to provide the listener a listening experience of intriguing sound-on-sound. Rather than the sunny sleepwalk of new-age-style waves of saccharine melody, Lahey weaves complex themes throughout each composition.

This is not music for everyone—but it is music for anyone. In “No Cure”, Daniel Robert Lahey takes the listener in for a digital scan, and the diagnosis is positive for sound. This is sound to take the indolence of an idle hour and turn it into the therapy of intriguing sonic exploration.

Fabio Keiner – BLACK RAIN
Fabio Keiner explores the landscape of the post-nuclear fallout of Nagasaki and Hiroshima on Black Rain.

In the days following the United States bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II, the residents were left to deal with the fallout from the devices. Nuclear fallout is commonly known as Black Rain. Fabio Keiner has recorded a series of works that looks at the exposure to radioactive fallout in terms of ambiguous time perspective. The X on Black Rain could be interpreted as days, weeks or even months.

Fabio Keiner hails from Vienna, Austria. He creates musical pieces and photographs. His credits include his contribution to the soundtrack to the 2015 award winning short film “Reformation” by director Hoyon Jung.

Active in the netlabel scene for years, his soundscapes, melodies and drones criss-cross the borders among ambient, dark ambient, abstract experimental and melodic electronica. His work is atmospheric and imaginative, with a sound that seems narrative without quite telling specific stories in defined words. His releases have appeared on numerous labels, including Treetrunk Netlabel, Webbed Hand Netlabel, Petroglyph Music, and Cian Orbe netlabel.

“Fallout Nevada Remastered”

Nobody’s Nail Machine – Fallout Nevada Remastered
Fallout of Nevada is a Russian Fallout 2 total conversion project. The development project started in 2009.
The developers sought to preserve the basic principles of the original, such as moral and ethical issues, post-nuclear wasteland gloomy atmosphere, black humor, and so on.
Soundtrack for Fallout of Nevada (in ambient and dark ambient styles) was written by composer Alexei Trofimov (aka Nobody’s Nail Machine). It is close to the design of the original series soundtrack by Mark Morgan (Fallout 1 & 2). These compositions have found great resonance among the fans of Fallout of Nevada and connoisseurs of the genre of ambient music.

Grid Resistor – Mu
Thomas Jackson Park (formerly known as Mystified) has undertaken a new approach to post-industrial age music with Grid Resistor. For this project he used contact microphones to make recordings of machines and appliances. These recordings were then processed digitally to find the hidden harmonics and rhythms. His latest release, Mu, focuses on finding the harmonies and rhythms in the noise produced by old shortwave radios.

Grid Resistor is Thomas Jackson Park’s first post-Mystified project. The Grid resister series is limited to twenty four releases, one for each letter of the Greek alphabet. (With a couple of side-project collaborations.) Mu is the final recording to be released in the series.

Rich Sudney – Parading Out The Devil
He who is in his late thirties, stares out into the open vast waters of northern lake Michigan. Blue sky above him reminds him of past wilderness adventures, hiking, camping, enjoying the company of no-one else but his solitude. As the ferry boat rocks ever so gently with each wave, his stare becomes hypnotic in the anticipation of traveling to a different world then he’s used to. From the cluttered exhausted saturated air of the motor city to the crisp clean everything of those islands in the middle of this lake. Traveling on a whim, spontaneous plans of going to meet and shake hands with his fears are all in the back of his mind. “You can plan for everything under the sun. But you’ll never plan for that banana peel you’ll slip on” he recalls from reading mystic literature. “I know I’ll make it” saying to himself in a reassuring vibe. Carefully planning every spot, step and strategy to get to a small island by kayak for months now. “Just remember the banana peel!”

My Own Cubic Stone – Glass Birds
“My Own Cubic Stone” defines its music as “Dark Ambient”. To many that means that his music could appear in a horror film, but for this artist the meaning of “dark” goes much further: it is a state of mind. A level of consciousness suitable for both introspection and to explore emotions and feelings that we normally avoid. Like traveling somewhere under glass clouds.

Many Cousin Silas works are built on the concepts found in science fiction and science. It is one of the most fertile grounds for exploration in an artistic context that is available.

Cold Star is a long-form recording that creates the ambiance of a long journey to another planet. This journey concludes with the view of a brown dwarf star, known as a “cold star”. Cold stars have long been the subject of science fiction, having been referenced in many novels and TV series. In science cold stars are commonly known as brown dwarfs, (or “failed stars”) which are unable to create their own energy.

Mr. & Oso – Se dice Misterioso [pn123]
“As every Tuesday night falls in the city of Viña del Mar; Moraga, Arellano and Castro meet to play and record what happens. Based on a spirit of camaraderie, they turn on their synthesizers, drum machines, effects and computers and once again begin their exercises in creating amusing and amiable improvisations. From these extensive sessions, recorded according to the dogma of the trio -directly to a stereo track-, they extract the passages that constitute each one of the six tracks that compose ‘Se dice Misterioso‘ (Its called mysterious).

Published by the indispensable Pueblo Nuevo, this is the third work of Mr. & Oso, an ensemble in electronic format that with its creative exercises transports us to the most inspiring grounds of Intelligent techno and the Ambient of the 90s, where electronica was – and here still is – a space of personal discovery, and at the same time a point of spiritual communion.

Either accompanying the beginning or end of the day; as much in solitude as among friends; wandering along the coast or without getting up from our chair, Se dice misterioso may be enjoyed equally, becoming an excellent soundtrack for a journey in which physical displacement is not necessary, since it is concentrated enough on the present to take us as far as we please.

With smiles of complicity and satisfaction, Mr. & Osos end the session tonight. It will not be until next week when they meet again and return to their instruments to exchange musings in a musical key.”

“Arquitectura espectral”

MRTN CSTR – Arquitectura espectral
MRTN CSTR – Arquitectura espectral

‘Arquitectura espectral’ is the second work by sound artist MRTN CSTR (Martín Castro) from Córdoba, Argentina for netlabel ‘Modismo’. In this EP made up of three tracks we are able to appreciate and enjoy once again digital atmospheres which are characteristic in his musical duty: gliding melodies, delicate rhythms, fine atmospheres, counterpoints. Martín builds his songs from technology, he experiments with creation of waveworms, sound synthesis, complex structures created with specialized sequencers and instruments for the software Reaktor. However, the results are far from being robotics or dehumanized because the structures (the ‘buildings’ of this architecture) become cozy, puzzling at the same time and profound, inviting us to inhabit them. Moving musical ideas based on algorithm and mathematical formulae from theory to practice tends to be a challenge that is rarely well resolved, as elevating a structure from paper to physical reality, and by ‘well resolved’ I mean experimenting the beauty of a good listening at last, the pleasure of self-abandonment to contemplation beyond the techniques or technologies utilized for its construction, which it is fully accomplished in ‘Arquitectura espectral’. As a good sculptor, Castro reveals the shape of his compositions from the development of sound layers that are added, subtracted, that interact and move around space, generating tensions and distensions, creating sounds-cells and sonic-organisms pieces that evolve in their route. This is the difference between the robot and its perfect and synchronized movements, versus the organic bodies-muscles with their subtle differences and their impossibility of doing exactly the same, the same way, all the time, where one could be more efficient than the other, but never more interesting to contemplate or, in this case, to listen.
