about

Since 2010, many netlabels and artists publish their new free music releases on the clongclongmoo website. Free means that you don't have to pay anything or register to download music. However, you can usually pay something to support the artists. Please note the licenses under which the music is published. This is important to know what you are allowed to do with the music. Please visit the labels' homepages to get the free music. Most files are published under a creative commons licence. At netlabellist you will find an extensive list of websites that also offer (or have offered) free music. If you run a netlabel yourself or offer your music for free and want to draw attention to it, you are welcome to use the submission form. And remember that clongclongmoo is not there to do business, because “Business Is Not My Music.”

Jan Strach

“Trawiaste Miasto”

Jan Strach – Trawiaste Miasto
Jan Strach, a lofi artist and an avid worshipper of the DIY doctrine, returns with another full length, as sprawling and ecclectic , as are JS’s inspirations: Frank Zappa, P.M. Dawn, 90s nostalgia, the city of Poznań, cheesy Casio sounds, odd time signatures, wacky chord changes.

There are no dull moments here, no filler, genres skipping between synth pop, grunge, progressive elements and even elements of reggae and fusion jazz interludes. The landscape is filled with elements of 90s popculture (through a Polish lens), and the cryptic lyrics describe, in Polish, nostalgic reality with poetic pathos. All the songs are , as all on Underpolen netlabel, with a lo-fi angle and a homeproduced charm.

Jan Strach is always ready to play with forms and genres. There is a song in 15/16 about a clock, adding 1 letter each verse up to 12. There is a bluegrass/country song with a warped synth interlude. An upbeat Casio pop number which suddenly erupts with farmyard samples which transform it into a swinging jazz instrumental. And so on.

The main hero of the album, however is the melody. It is clear that this is Jan Strach’s first love, and the thing that he keeps aiming for. Amidst all this disregard for genre and stylistic clarity, the one utmost pervasive tendency can be seen, and that is, to keep the tunes pretty and memorable.

Released on Jan Strach’s Underpolen Netlabel, where you can find all of his other projects and bands, as well as other riveting DIY acts

Putujmo zajedno…

Jan Strach

“Nie ma jak w domu e.p.”

Jan Strach – Nie ma jak w domu e.p.
Released as part of the first global Netlabel Day, this e.p. by Jan Strach continues the tradition started with the previous e.p., “Jan Strach Piszczy W Narożniku”. It collects songs and instrumentals created while Jan Strach was working on his full length albums, their only problem being that they did not fit in with the longplays’ general atmosphere.

Otherwise, Jan Strach is proud and happy to present to the world this collection of beautiful things, as usual with JS full of stylistic surprises: a wobbly weave of ping-pongy piano combined with a barely breathing flute and a dirty one-string guitar; a marimba-stylophone luau reverberating as if from a cave with stomping and finger snaps. A shoe-noisy dreamy rock tune about travelling birds, and a punk thing with girly choruses in a time signature of i-lost-count/4 and a toy and a flute; that’s not all.

As usual with Underpolen Netlabel offerings it is lo-fi, diy, full of odd passionate homemade energy.

Павкашавет бантут – Сон прошлогоднего снега
New album of Chita musician and poet Sergei Zolin, aka Pavkashavet Bantut perhaps the most dismal in the discography of the artist. «Сон прошлогоднего снега» – is a 35-minute dive into the darkness of what we call the post-Soviet space. And if “The voices on the stairs of Jacob” may denote something, so it would be the voices on a ladder between earth and hell. Quite notable is the only thing with text support – «Долгое прощание», after which you will feel binding approaching of hopelessnes from all sides.

“Oompa Loopma Riot”

Various Artists – Oompa Loopma Riot
From 1979 to 1983, the Australian Terse Tapes label made cassette compilations. These are in danger of becoming “classics”, a complete betrayal of the energy that made them. There is no better antidote to cloying nostalgia than the corpse getting up and refusing the funeral.

So instead say that from 1979 to 2015, Terse Tapes made compilations, and here is more of the same. You could put it on a cassette if that matters.

I invited a few people I know, and they invited a few people they know, and music started to arrive in my inbox. I refused to listen to any of it until April Fools day. No one curated anything, although some people were nice enough to chase up their friends.

Having heard this music over the last 24 hours I can divide it into some useful ‘sides’, but keep in mind you are able to arrange it however you like in this non-linear wonderland in which we are trapped.

Side A: people who have doubts about music.
Side B: people who do not fear a pretty tune.
Side C: people that make graphs and grids.
Side D: people who could plausibly perform in a public ale house
Side T: time lords

Although supplied for no payment, there are specific rights attached to the recordings, which remain the property of the artists. Do not sell this music for a profit, do not use this music for any commercial purpose, including but not limited to, placement alongside advertisements or behind paywalls.

Deftechnixks – Reliefless

UPL 061

Deftechnixks

“Reliefless”

Deftechnixks – Reliefless
“Reliefless” is a 4th album by Deftechnixks, an experimental rock unit which employs different rules, strategies and approaches to their every album.

This time, Deftechnixks decided to explore repetition in rock music, by releasing 12 songs, each based around repeating the same motif over and over again. The result, however, is far from boring! Each consecutive song is constructed from increasing number of notes for each instrument, thus for track 1 there is a 1 note motif for drums, bass, guitars, keyboards and vocals, for track 2 each consists of 2 different notes and so on, up to 12.

However cerebral this may sound, the resulting songs are actually very much rock music, bouncing between punkish simplicity, postrock clouds, metallic screaming, industrial mechanics, shoegaze dreaminess and plain all catchy sing-alongs.

Instead of being monotonuous, the melodical, rhythmical and production choices make it a fun listen, since Deftechnixks eagerly employs minor changes here and there, ranging from minimalistic, like occasional additional snare and cymbal hits, through very gradual, like expanding palette on “caffeine” or a “hidden” vocal track emerging in “Turn your pink eye to the sky”, purposefully leaving the accidentally doubled instrumental track on “hey bird trash double” or even straight-up demolishing one motif by overlaying it with another, creating a loopy cacophony in “Snow Shelby Over Vasenby”.

So, this is an experimental rock album one can actually rock out to, and at the same time a groovy rock album that is fun to take apart and look into its interlocking parts, all put in a specific order.

Enjoy and worry not, since the most important rule is always “if any rule stands in the way to creating an enjoyable song, disregard the rule immediately!”

Et Quid Amabo Nisi Quod Aenigma Est?

Die Elektrischen Vorspiele, a blog founded on January 15 2009, and whose sixth anniversary is commemorated with this release, was envisioned as a space for the nurturing of a “savage thought” (that is, of an undisciplined nature). In its essence, and as an individual project, it aims mostly to be a vehicle for its author’s vast-reaching interests, while at the same time harnessing them into some form of discipline. More than just a reflection on the fascination caused by the themes implicit to its lexical field of action, as shown by the coordinates and key concepts that define the boundaries of its territory, i.e. “Occultism” / “Esotericism”, this virtual space mainly maps some of the topologies enclosed in the History of Ideas. A vast and sometimes ignored area of Knowledge, whose apparently paradoxical character drives a magnetic pull towards the need to identify its true nature, as ubiquitously manifested along various historical cycles, in an unending drama staged in the theatre of the Anima Mundi. This is, in fact, the true raison d’être of Die Elektrischen Vorspiele.
As a direct result of its existence, November 2010 saw the publication of the book “Summa Techno(i)logicae”. This work, as implied by its title, is a thoroughly compiled and systematised patchwork reflecting the interests that guide its author’s research. From then on, periodic collaborations with other projects ensued, such as the magazines Finis Mundi, Infernus and Antibothis.
Still under the aegis of Die Elektrischen Vorspiele, and always through the establishment of complicities and connections, a number of events were created and carried out in the past six years. This set of actions (with Music as a constant common denominator) has had as its main goal the evocation of the life and work of various figures that have left behind crucial legacies. The people celebrated include the musician John Balance (Coil); the historian of religions Mircea Eliade; the poet and theatre director Antonin Artaud; the philosopher Georges Bataille; and the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. It is also worth mentioning the series of events spanning along the year 2013, Occult Esoterica AV Gatherings, curated in collaboration with intermedia artist Ana Carvalho.
The proposal made to EdP – Editora do Porto (in the person of its administrator, João Ricardo) for the release of this compilation emerges as a consequence of shared common cosmologies which have gradually been transmuted into friendship, and also of João Ricardo’s encyclopaedic musical knowledge, while the invitations made to the artists taking part in it are the logical result of a chaining together of elective affinities (a process permanently taking place since the first Homeric dawn).

Polish musician Jan Strach returns with a collection of catchy songs combining his love for his Casio keyboard, irregular rhythms and song structures and his distaste for cliches and predictability. Pop, rock, punk and some latin flavors clash and combine with dreamy atmospheres, experimental touches and stream-of consciousness lyrics. As always, earnest, catchy and full of ideas.

I think I finally figured out the point of my own music: I want it to be like those tapes from the movie “V/H/S”, where you just find some random fucked-up tape and watch it and you’re just like “who made this? Where did it come from? How was this even made??!” Anyway, here is some music I made. Enjoy.

C. Reider – Not Subliminal
“Not Subliminal” has just been released on the Control Valve netlabel. There is no direct link to the album, due to the way the netlabel is structured. You need to visit http://controlvalve.net and click the photo to get to the download page.

The netlabel’s succinct description of the work is “cassette experiments”. Pretty accurate.

I experimented a lot with cassette players & cassettes this Summer. Further releases will document the full extent of the results of these experiments. This particular set of recordings is primarily improvisations with multiple handheld tape recorders and players. I scavenged a bunch of these and a bunch of tapes from thrift stores this Summer. Much of the process involved recording some stuff onto one tape while playing back previously recorded stuff on the other tape players, and letting it all mix together out loud… recording everything onto the shitty little onboard microphones that these handheld tape recorders had. The sounds I recorded mingled together with environmental sounds and got grittier and more lo-fi as continually overdubbed. Some results were extremely distorted, others just muffled and gritty.

One exception to the method used on most of this album is “Gala Video ’94”. In that track, I took a found video cassette and cut strips out of the tape down to 1/8″ so that they could play on a standard cassette player. You can hear the video data as audio in this track, and on occasion the audio soundtrack cuts in. When I sliced the video tape I tried to do it in a curving way so that different areas of the 1/2″ wide video tape would be exposed to the 1/8″ player head as the tape advanced. This explains the changing nature of the track as it progresses.

So, a lot of what I released this year might be described as “pretty”, or “approachable”… this release can’t really be described that way, but I think it’s really interesting to listen to. I hope you will too.
