Since 2010, many netlabels and artists publish their new free music releases on the clongclongmoo website. Free means that you don't have to pay anything or register to download music. However, you can usually pay something to support the artists. Please note the licenses under which the music is published. This is important to know what you are allowed to do with the music. Please visit the labels' homepages to get the free music. Most files are published under a creative commons licence. At netlabellist you will find an extensive list of websites that also offer (or have offered) free music. If you run a netlabel yourself or offer your music for free and want to draw attention to it, you are welcome to use the submission form. And remember that clongclongmoo is not there to do business, because “Business Is Not My Music.”

Deficit I Alexei Borisov – Khan and Atlas

Deficit I Alexei Borisov – Khan and Atlas
[ACP 1397]

Deficit I Alexei Borisov

“Khan and Atlas”

It was composed and recorded by Alexei Borisov and Vyacheslav Ismagilov (January/2024)

The children of the members of the ruling dynasty were immediately deprived of their lives, and the women from the harem were given as wives to the khan’s entourage. The subsequent fate of the former shahini and the “Lady of Women” was tragic. She, among other notable people of Khorezm, was sent with a caravan of prisoners to the capital of Mongolia, the city of Karakorum. There they were supposed to serve at the court of the great khan. And they became concubines.

Prism Capture

“IV”

Prism Capture are Jonathan Deasy and Jonas Geiger Ohlin. A friendship that started when Jonathan took part in Music for Mental Health, a compilation to raise founds for Mind UK curated by Jonas. The two has stayed connected since. The seed that grew to be Prism Capture was planted when Jonathan let Jonas listen to his album to be Adversary. Jonas found inspiration in the work and took the liberty of reworking/remixing the two tracks into what later was released as Ally. The two was intrigued by the possibilities a collaboration could bare. The music that followed is what became Prism Capture. A project that captures Jonathan’s ambient drone work with Jonas more pop oriented soundscapes.

Anthimeria: a word that is both a noun and a verb.
Anthimerias have become more and more ubiquitous as human linguistics have evolved throughout the early 21st Century.

The Process:

The recordings in this collection all started out as improvisations, played by Goff on a Casio AP-24 electric piano. This full-sized, 88 key piano was purchased from a Salvation Army store in Bonner Springs, Kansas, and appears to once have been employed to serve up the music for church services somewhere in the Kansas City area. Goff recorded his improvisations through the open-air microphones of a Canon S2 IS digital camera. By avoiding the use of direct line-in recording, all the overtones echoing from the piano’s speakers, some of the sounds of Goff’s fingers hitting the piano keys, and even some occasional squeaks of Goff’s chair are present in these recordings.

Using “AmazingMIDI” computer software, Goff converted each of these digital recordings into MIDI files. This particular software converts every bit of recorded data from a wave file into a monophonic MIDI format. The MIDI file then can be read by MIDI score-writing software, allowing all of its recorded sounds (including overtones and the noises of squeaking chairs) to appear as notation. Such score-writing software provides the means for artists to apply sounds from a wide variety of virtual (computer-generated) instruments to the MIDI notation. Score writers also allow artists to transpose musical keys, delete/add notation, copy and paste musical passages, add reverb and chorus effects, etc.

Goff used three different score-writers, programmed into three different computer operating systems, when molding the recordings for Anthimerias:

1) Midisoft Music Mentor MIDI Scorewriter (released 1994)
run on Microsoft Windows XP OS (2013)

2) Musescore MIDI Scorewriter (Version 1.1, released 2011)
run on Microsoft Windows 10 OS (2016)

3) Musescore MIDI Scorewriter (Version 3.6.2, released 2021)
run on Linux Ubuntu OS (2022)

Each of these three setups provided Goff with its own unique pallet of sounds and editing controls. Goff gradually refined his compositions by transferring partially-edited MIDI files from one setup to another, allowing him to alter the files again and again using all three sets of software parameters. He later re-converted his edited MIDI files into wave files and further orchestrated them with Cool Edit Pro 2.1 (released 2003) multitrack audio-editing software. During this final process, bits of the original, open-air Casio electric piano recordings were layered into some of the mixes as well. Thus, each Anthimerias composition features its own unique blend of instrumentation, dynamics, and overall attitude.

No material that did not originate from the Casio electric piano improvisations was added during the production of this collection. Some of the aforementioned overtones and incidental finger and chair noises did convert into MIDI notation, however. Several of these happy accidents were incorporated into the final mixes of this collection. No artificial intelligence was used in the production of Anthimerias.

To help listeners envision the composition process of Anthimerias, a printed PDF score of “Form” is included in this collection. This 265-page document was created through Musescore software after Goff had finished editing the piece.

Dental Drill Slips

“Plays Away”

Dental Drill is autistic and so not big on collaborations. However over the years he has cropped up on a few compilations on other labels, sometimes as part of tourmaline hum. We are taking the 10th anniversary of TCFSR on Bandcamp as an opportunity to pull these tracks together to make a complete set of the work of Dental Drill available on the label that he oversees. Many of DDs ‘away’ tracks are from the early days of the Naviar Records Haiku Music Challenge. naviarrecords.bandcamp.com www.naviarrecords.com
The Naviar Haiku is music inspired by a weekly assigned Haiku poem. It is also ten years old this year and is well past the 500th iteration. Dental Drill contributed to five of the first twelve Haiku, and number 131.
Just Around The Bend appears on the first compilation of Naviar Haiku naviarrecords.bandcamp.com/album/haiku-1 and Tilt is on the second compilation naviarrecords.bandcamp.com/album/haiku-2

In 2015 Dental Drill teamed up with Trixie Delight to create the track Urball for the compilation Ursonate on the Institute For Alien Research label. As the title of the album suggests the goal was to create a work of musique concrète inspired by the sound poem Ursonate by Kurt Schwitters.

Fantastique Plastique [Drillmix] is a collage of a work of the same name by Roofhare that appeared on the album of the same name released on the Mobius Spin label. mobiusspin.bandcamp.com/album/mbsspn010-fantastique-plastique

In 2020 dog park invited artists from across the world to create their own track using Furchick’s raw recording of making pancakes in her kitchen. Two and a bit kitchens is Dental Drill’s contribution dogparkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/kitchen

In the days before TCFSR launched on Bandcamp tourmaline hum created the track Strange Appetites for The Sound of FAG ASH Volume three released by FAG ASH Records. fagashrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-sound-of-fag-ash-volume-three

Some artists from Burnt Seed Records contributed to the TCFSR Solo Word Project compilation EPOCH released in January 2024. In the same month the track 9224 by Dental Drill appeared on volume 3 of Burnt Seed’s annual showcase ‘Sprouted’. burntseedrecords.bandcamp.com/album/sprouted-volume-3

tourmaline hum – choreography

tourmaline hum – choreography

tourmaline hum

“choreography”

The history of The Committee For Sonic Research is entwined with the band tourmaline hum and its precursors. So when in 2014 TCFSR was resurrected in digital form the first thing that we did was to release material that tourmaline hum had self released in our absence.
This included three of four albums, however for some reason their first album, choreography, was omitted.
Thinking back no one can remember why!

The tenth anniversary of TCFSR on Bandcamp seems a good time to correct this oversight.

Vanishing – Corridor Vanishing Corridor

Vanishing – Corridor Vanishing Corridor
[mhrk385]

Vanishing

“Corridor Vanishing Corridor”

Vanishing Corridor is the synthesis of American sound experimenters Kingo Sleemer (Western Maryland) and Chris Campbell (St. Paul, Minnesota).

Campbell has been recording dark ambient/sound collage/field-recorded soundscapes as The Creeping Man since 2017, both as self-releases and on various labels (Hrea’m Recordings, Mono Time, Dub Cthonic, Veinte 33, Preston Capes Tapes, Wormhole World, and Shady Ridge Records), most recently finding inspiration via collaborations with like-minded artists.

Kingo has been part of the experimental music collective Halaka since the late 90s, with whom he’s recorded and released many albums in many formats; he has recently recorded and released music as Allele Cog Experiment, HOZ and Experimental College. He is also a co-founder of Pile Records.

The two share an affinity for the absurd, the obtuse, and the off-kilter.

Vanishing Corridor started as a back-and-forth exercise of sound sharing and manipulation, without preconceived themes or intentions.

The project debuts on February 18, 2024 on Mahorka with a beautiful self-titled cassette release.

Various Artists – Latent Sonorities

Various Artists – Latent Sonorities
[YESNO 109]

Various Artists

“Latent Sonorities”

What might the latent sonorities of ‘traditional’ instruments sound like if their tunings were unlocked for different modernities? Where might the diasporas of trans-Asian sonics intersect and rematriate?

Recorded on September 15th and 16th, 2023 this album features new compositions and semi-improvised work from 8 trans-Asian artists exploring southeast Asian tonalities using traditional instruments, digitized tunings, and sampled recordings.

Thanks to cooperation with Haus der Indonesichen Kulturen – Rumah Budaya Indonesia – Berlin (RBI), select instruments from their Javanese gamelan ensemble were sampled to create Berlin’s first publicly accessible sonic archive of Indonesian instruments and temperaments for electronic musicians.

Following the creation of the sample pack and tuning files, a short residency, open studio, and final performance series of new work using the materials was produced in collaboration with Morphine Raum.

Included with this album download is a PDF booklet where you can get historical background on the instruments and read interviews with stewards, artists, and researchers involved in this project.

The companion site at https://www.latentsonorities.org hosts the sample pack and tuning files recorded and developed by Bilawa Ade Respati and Khyam Allami, an Ableton Live Pack with custom Ableton Instruments by Morgan Sully and Khyam, a Native Instruments Kontact Library, as well as other resources for artists and researchers curious to expand their gamelanic palette.

This open archive has already provoked and stimulated public discourse around the complexities and nuances of musical rematriation, trans-Asian identity, and its political expression through non-Western temperament and tonality.

We hope it serves as a starting point for future exploration of musical cosmologies you may be curious about, a recentering beyond what is sonically inculcated.

This project is co-funded by Musikfonds e.V., Die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien/The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media and supported by the National Arts Council of Singapore.

Room of Wires

“Decayed”

For Room of Wires, this is still the beginning, always eager to explore new ground, even after 10 years. Here, they invite some of their past allies to re-work a few highlights from the last decade, as well as a couple of re-workings from themselves.

It felt right that this release should go out on S27, the label that helped start their journey.

So, here’s to the next decade, whatever it may bring. For now, enjoy Decayed – a hard-hitting celebration of isolation and collaboration.
