Gardens From Light – The Axis Of The Skies

[RB106]

Gardens From Light

“The Axis Of The Skies”

Gardens From Light have been part of the Resting Bell family since their first release in 2007, “Birds Of Joy And Sorrow”. It’s been four and a half years since that colossal debut, and following a protracted genesis, the new one-man version of Gardens From Light brings us “The Axis Of The Skies”.”The Axis Of The Skies” is a huge 77-minute piece, loosely inspired by the H.P. Lovecraft story Polaris. It is designed to evoke a feeling of drifting in and out of a dream world, whilst simultaneously floating through space towards a dying star. It is divided into 5 pieces but is best enjoyed as a single long-form piece. If you take a listen, you’ll drift into a massive world of sound. Sparkling melodies; dark, droning environments and GFL’s trademark use of field recordings are all there, changing around and guiding you through this journey. The climax of the piece is the fourth section, “Gravity Assist”, with its slowly-evolving, harshly distorted parts changing to a very subtle and quiet passage leading into the final part of the work.

As ever, I can recommend to listen to this piece with headphones and with much time in the pocket. Welcome back, Gardens From Light – and thanks a lot for this exceptional work.

PiXtar – Reflection

[MIXG027]

PiXtar

“Reflection”

PiXtar is back with his fourth album. That’s right. Describing sound in multimedia era is kinda tedios and absolutely useless work. But we need to write something about it, don’t we? Our regular followers could notice that PiXtar’s tracks have a complicated multilayered structure with many little details all over the room and on the other hand there are pretty rhytmic commonly acceptable grooves. This album has rather ‘mainstream’ than ‘underground’ flavour. The sound is cool and solid as usual, less IDM more electro and breakbeat with a slight reminiscence of retro electronica. After all since the myth about always young and always progressive electronic music had busted we are sentenced to retro. This album description is over. It’s time to listen to the MUSIC.

Hassan K. – 30 Birds

[DDD006]

Hassan K.

“30 Birds”

30 birds. This represents the size of the Simurgh, fabulous eagle from the Persian mythology. This symbolic creature sign of the beginning of the epic heroes stories of Persia. Oscillating between surf rock, electronic and traditional music, this second album decrypts and reinterprets the history… with a touch of madness and absurdity.

Lugol’s Iodine – Staff EP

[UPL 040]

Lugol’s Iodine

“Staff EP”

Menacing, bleak poetry combined with trembling, post-industrial groove, tinged with electronic gothic and neofolk…The band has a strong sense of dynamics, administering cold sounds, which evolve from seemingly simple repetitions into hypnotizing soundscapes.
From the band:
The third album by the band, “Staff” EP, was created in a duo, or even a trio Lech, the only constant member of the project, is responsible for the majority of music, and the arrangement and performance of vocal lines (as well as flute tracks) was taken care of by Agata, a vocalist with a wide studio and stage experience. The third, most important point of this triangle are the lyrics taken from a notable Polish poet, Leopold Staff.

THE WEB – monoton I

[DAST EXTRA 01]

THE WEB

“monoton I”

…IN 1994 WAS BORN THE SPIRIT OF “monoton”! ONLY 14 YEARS LATER FOLLOWED HER SOUL! AND NOW IT GETS THE BODY…, THE CREATOR “THE WEB” TELLS US ABOUT THE HISTORY, ORIGINS AND BACKGROUNDS, TO HIS GREAT WORK…

The “monoton” series were created between october 2008 and april 2009. All tracks follow the same principle: They are all basedon a central audio track with sounds from a famous vintage analogsynthesizer – the Korg MS-10. I extracted these sounds from a tapedating back to 1994/95.

THE WEB: “Once on a saturday in late summer 1994 there was one of these flea marketsin my home town Winterthur. I was in the pub when a colleague bustedin, came straight to me and excitedly asked me if I knewwhat a Korg MS-10 is and if I wanted to buy one – if yes I would haveto hurry because he found one at a stand of the flea market, for only300 bucks (Swiss Franks)! Although back then I was only DJing fromtime to time, but was not doing my own music, had no drum machinesand other equipment, I knew this was a golden opportunity I shouldn’tpass up – techno and house music had become popular and the pricesfor old analog synths nobody was interested in a few years ago hadrisen to astronomical levels. So I immediately went out to the standand bought this vintage device. Back home, I explored the sounds ofit in depth, also because I had no other instrument that competed forattention. I experimented with the patch cords and tried everyconnection. “Sick and industrial sounds and lots of dirt iswhat the MS can do at it’s best” (www.sequencer.de) – oh yes, that’s exactly what I like. Everytime I had found a sound that Iliked I recorded a few minutes of it on tape. Since I always wantedto do my own electronic music tracks but back then couldn’t affordthe equipment I decided to give the Korg MS-10 to my friend Sauri, former DJ from Winterthur (DJ Das Sausen) and drummer of the band”men from s.p.e.c.t.r.e” (superb instrumental music! -visit www.men-from-spectre.org).

Thankgod I had recorded this tape – finally, 14 years later I was able touse this stuff for my own electronic music tracks. After I made the Freeze!-seriesand a few inofficial remixes of oldies-but-goldies from the 80ies (REMIXED)I wanted to do something more “raw”, stripped down, classictechno, so this old Korg MS-10 tape was very wellcome. I used thesounds on it as a basis for the tracks (definig theme/mood, suitablebeat and speed), added one or two drummachines, an additional synth-or bassline or a few effects – and that was it. Since the Korg MS-10is monophonic I used the working title “monoton” for thisseries of tracks.

Thetracks on “monoton I” vary from oldschool technohouseacid-like style (monoton5 – doppelstern),wavy rocking breakbeat (waveroller)and even friendly downtempo (cleanup)to raw industrial machine beat (alientank). In monotonX there’sno drummachine, all the drum sounds came from Korg MS-10.

“monotonII” contains alternative versions of several tracks from”monoton I”; the tracks are renamed so that the original aswell as the new version are visible. alientank forexample grew to alientanks in the storm,a three part version with one tank in the beginning and another onereturning to the windy, empty battlefield (middle part) at the end. Apeculiar element in several tracks here is the different tempo of thebeat while keeping the original tempo of the Korg MS-10 sound track,in a ratio 4:3 (pulsatingsource of radio, little jumper, planet easy). In planeteasy sucha change in tempo occurs in the middle of the track, deviding it ina livingslow anda livingfast part.In the spacy quasi-stellarradio source, the effect of slowing down is reached by a 3/4 echo-effect anda differentbeat – the tempo remains the same as in the 4/4-trance-styleoriginal monoton6 – quasar.”

marina poleukhina – lp1

[pyr050]

marina poleukhina

“lp1”

marina poleukhina is a composer and improviser based in moscow. her musical focus lies in composition and improvisation on various objects and the instability of sound; silence and silence as the sound; real life and real life as sound. amongst others she is inspired by ligeti, nono, feldman, waits, yoshihide, and hosseini.

her first album, simply titled lp1, is a collection of improvisations and compositions. it sounds kind of like: pulse flute flutter and trills. warble pops and muttering percussion. dropped cymbals. conversation in cries and rolls. natural space. quiet exploration of scraped vibrations. surface areas calculated. squeaks and hoarse voicings. thunder and roar, guttural friction and noise. everything at once. voice in the woods. quiet patience. strum rewards.

V/A – Resurge Two

[tdn009]

V/A

“Resurge Two”

A relatively uptempo release on This Side Down is the second piece of the Resurge puzzle. Three unique tracks coming from two familiar faces and yet another newcomer on This Side. No stranger to us, Yiannis Likos shared one of his tracks a long time ago, a piece of music we always wanted to place as a release starter and that now seems to have found a perfect fit. Late Nites is a completely hardware based, timeless retro-feel electronic track that blends beautifully a phat bassline, a wicked flute and rich snares to a great effect.

Lee Fraged takes an opposite approach with his laptop acid electro track Helix composed deep in the mountains using his headphones only. Blunt beats and moody pads pair up with 909 based percussion and an acidic bassline taking you with him in a downward spiral.

Mick Chillage, after his great releases on Pete Namlook’s FAX records and txt recordings, offers up another of his exquisite tracks, Alive With Wires, a nicely arranged electronic track with moody pads & distinctive melodies, a redeeming closer to your listening session…

Track 1 w+p by Giannis Likos, 2007, Chania, Greece.
Track 2 w+p by Lefteris Fragkedis, 2011, Kakopetros, Greece.
Track 3 w+p by Mick Chillage, 2011, Dublin, Ireland.
Mastered by Dimitri Barnias at Diapason Studio, 2012, Crete, Greece.

iky iky & Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt – Cold Cell

iky iky & Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt

“Cold Cell”

Laetitia Schteinberg (iky iky) started her first solo recordings in the early 00’s. The resulting soundscapes were based on found noises, processed guitar sounds, lo-fi ambiences and field recordings. Most of her creations were inspired by the anxiety in the past and struggle for the right to live. Later she became heavily involved with sculpting new sounds using modern VST technologies either from scratch or using different sound sources, and creation of “evolving” textures of either electronic or electroacoustic nature.

Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt is a composer of experimental sunburnt soundscapes, the developer of the accidental guitar method, producer, founder, and curator of Friends of Sagittarius Records, he also makes “miniature film clips” to the release of his compositions.

Thoughts – 600 Seconds

Thoughts

“600 Seconds”

Carefully sculpted sounds, wandering rhythms and experimentations pushing the boundaries of sonic sculpture and textural compositions yet still remaining remarkably accessible.

Thoughts is a collaborative sound project of Laetitia Schteinberg and Roberto Lazzarino.

Laetitia has produced solo work as Ars Sonor and side project iky iky. She is deeply involved in the sculpting of new sounds via modern vst technologies, from scratch or using different sound sources, and creation of “evolving” textures of either electronic or electroacoustic nature.

Roberto Lazzarino started playing a broken guitar in 1973 and lends his particular emotive and eclectic collection of various instrumentations to the evolving soundscapes of Thoughts.

“With each track comes a new state of being. Washes of ambient, neo-classic folk & ethno-funk break the shores of electronica by Thoughts – Laetitia Schteinberg (Ars Sonor) and Roberto Lazzarino. Instrumental organics woven with contemplative atmospheres taut with curiosity and electronic tension.” (Phil Ford)

Igor Har – Ona Prekrasna

[ER075]

Igor Har

“Ona Prekrasna”

Welcome again to Effluvia with the works of Igor Har. Mostly spoken, this album is quick but chilling. Whether you understand the language or not is irrelevant, Igor Har makes these two tracks very powerful with his voice. The background sound offer a deep, profound state of contemplation for the listener, and then there’s his voice. Laetitia Schteinberg, who introduced me to this eerie musician who I am immediately in love with, mentioned to me that what he is speaking are tales of vulgarity and alarm, so tasty. Lovely abstract stories semi told to give forth a vague numbness and nausea. Musings of a homosexual maniac who kidnaps little boys and performs obscene acts upon them. Something like that, and you can tell in his manner of speaking that he sure knows how to tell a story. I love this work, and hope I hear this voice all over the place. Much love for this piece. It won’t take long, so please listen with the lights off, all alone. I’d appreciate it. Effluvia would appreciate it.

David Inexacte – Flama

[NN_LP013_04_12]

David Inexacte

“Flama”

David Inexacte is an experimental project, based on electronic IDM music, raising an aesthetic and conceptual break with the intention of fleeing the typical stereotypes, without departing from the techno feelings. The work he presents in “Flama” selection can be defined as a set of burning basses, breaks, clics and distortion dance pieces, with a mischievous and playful spirit.
